Excited about the list of the worlds first tier cities is also a kind of self doubt.

Recently, a list on the ranking of world cities, World City List 2018, has attracted the attention of domestic public opinion. The list was compiled by an organization called Research Network of Globalization and World Cities (GaWC). 707 cities were ranked according to the office network of 175 advanced producer services companies in major cities of the world. According to GaWCs classification of cities, six cities in China, including Taipei and Hong Kong, have entered the ranks of first-tier cities in the world. Beijing and Hongkong have also entered the worlds top four.

The ranking of cities on the 12th, 13th and 4th tiers used in this list is not unfamiliar to China, and has a very wide public opinion base. For a long time, cities in China have been ranked by different levels, and the rise and fall of seats between different cities are often irresistible. This time, GaWC upgraded the city classification to the world, which clearly touched the excitement of some Chinese cities.

It is undeniable that after 40 years of reform and opening up, Chinas urban landscape has undergone tremendous changes, and even can be said that some cities have fully matched the worlds first-class cities. Neither economic vitality, urban convenience nor the spirit of the public can be lost to people. However, we can hardly find the calm and heavy city self-confidence. As soon as there is any ranking, it is full of fans, either the ranking is rising with joy, or all kinds of disobedience that fail to appear on the list. The ranking of GaWC is still the same.

To be frank, although many domestic media reported GaWC as a well-known international research institute in this ranking, it is quite unfamiliar to Chinese people. According to relevant reports, GaWC was founded by the Department of Geography of the University of Loughbourg, UK, but the University of Loughbourg is not in the top international ranking. As for the world ranking of cities released by GaWC, the international mainstream media has not paid attention to it.

More importantly, the index system based on the ranking of GaWC world cities is not popular in China. It is mainly based on the distribution of banking, insurance, law, consulting management, advertising and accounting in cities. That is to say, the more the six industries are distributed and ranked in a city, the more the city scores.

Any list has its own index structure and calculation basis, which is not to blame. The evaluation index system adopted by GaWC is not unreasonable, but whether authority or science is doubtful. At best, it can be regarded as a list of areas and directions, but it is only a word to divide the worlds cities into twelve, threes and fourteen lines.

Of course, the real question is not whether GaWCs list is authoritative science, but whether it can attract so much attention at home. This is naturally due to the lack of authoritative similar research in China and the lack of a recognized evaluation system for the development of modern Chinese metropolises. At present, there are many disputes about city rating in China. In addition to satisfying the vanity of some cities, many of them have little reference value.

In this way, it is natural to give the evaluation voice of city ranking to others, creating space for some organizations to pan for gold. Therefore, we should reconsider that the rapid development of Chinas big cities really need a city evaluation system that is in line with Chinas actual situation. In order to encourage the city to improve the level of governance, so that urban development is more suitable for people to live, so that people have more sense of happiness. More importantly, it also has something to do with the mentality of many city managers in our country at present, who are impatient, pay more attention to achievements than problems, and like great achievements. However, there are still some deficiencies in understanding the real problems, such as the lack of supporting facilities in the rapidly developing new urban areas, fine urban governance, the rule of law and environmental protection, and so on. Therefore, some cities also lack the impetus to improve. True big cities should have enough confidence and determination to see their achievements and not avoid shortcomings. Ranking is only temporary. The key is to identify who the city is. Otherwise, it is hard to say that a city list has multiple components. Just because it is named the world, it arouses heated discussion in the domestic media and cities. It is really embarrassing. Source: Xu Bing, editor in chief of Beijing News: Ji Ke _b6492
