The result of an independent referendum in Frances overseas territories: more than half oppose independence

New Caledonia is an overseas dependency of France, located in the South Pacific Ocean. It consists of New Caledonia, Loyalty Islands and uninhabited Chesterfield Islands, 18,000 kilometers from France. Its nickel deposits account for about 1/4 of world reserves.

New Caledonia is a special collective of France in Oceania. It enjoys a high degree of autonomy and can hold an independent referendum. In 1853, France occupied the island. Since then, the island has become a French colony and used to be a place of exile for French criminals.

Until the 1980s, there was a serious conflict between Kanak and white people who supported independence, in which more than 70 people were killed. In 1998, the two sides reached the Noumea agreement and are scheduled to hold an independent referendum in November 4, 2018.

Earlier, French President Mark Long said he was very proud of the preliminary results of the independence referendum and believed in France and its future and values. Source: overseas web editor: Qian Yue Xiao _NBJ10675
