Data show that the PM2.5-hour concentration in Beijing began to increase rapidly in the evening of the first day, from 38 micrograms/cubic meters (15:00 a.m. on the first day) to 109 micrograms/cubic meters (21:00 a.m. on the first day), and then continued to rise.

Since October 30, atmospheric diffusion conditions in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and surrounding areas have begun to deteriorate, according to the Center for Attack-Association and Cooperation. The PM2.5 concentration in the cities along the Taihang-Yanshan Mountains was gradually increased by the adverse meteorological conditions such as the decrease of wind speed, the increase of humidity and the inversion of temperature near the ground, and the continuous transportation of polluted air masses from the southerly airflow. Regional pollution presents a developing trend from south to north.

Based on the results of the emission inventory of air pollution sources in 2+26 cities in 2017, the emissions of primary particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and other gaseous precursors from Tangshan, Shijiazhuang, Tianjin, Handan and Xingtai cities in the north of the region ranked first in the 2+26 cities. As a result, once adverse meteorological conditions occur, the rapid accumulation of pollutants will easily occur, leading to the rapid rise of PM2.5 concentration.

According to the air quality forecast of the provincial monitoring centers in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and the surrounding areas, China Environmental Monitoring Station consulted with Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei provincial monitoring centers, on the 3rd day, the diffusion conditions continued to be unfavorable, the humidity was relatively high, and the air flow near the ground was mainly southerly, superimposing the effect of temperature inversion, and the regional pollution was significantly aggravated and maintained. In the central part of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province, the main pollutants are Grade 4 moderate pollution to Grade 5 severe pollution. The peak concentration of PM2.5 hours can exceed 200 micrograms/cubic meters. According to the current observation, on the 4th day, the diffusion conditions will be improved due to the influence of the northerly cold air, but the process of regional pollution mitigation is slow. From May to August, due to the continuous influence of cold air, the diffusion conditions are generally better. The air quality in most areas of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei and its surrounding areas is mainly first-class excellent and second-class good. In some areas of central and southern Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, southern Shanxi, western Shandong and Northern Henan, there may be third-class light pollution. According to the analysis of the medium and long-term weather situation of the National Climate Center, from November to December this year, the meteorological conditions in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and the surrounding areas were unfavourable compared with last year. As the regions gradually entered the heating period, the situation of air pollution prevention and control would be more arduous.
