As part of the program, Google. org, Googles charity, launched the AI ImpactChallenge, which provides up to $25 million in funding to support outstanding AI projects. The sponsors will announce at the I/O Developers Conference in 2019 that the AI system developed for this event will be open source.

Within Google, projects supported by the Social Interest AI Initiative also include using TensorFlow to reduce Iowa traffic accidents and augmented reality microscopes to help medical professionals do their work. Whale sounds and illegal logging will be the focus of two other rainforest and whale conservation programs. Jeff Dean, head of Googles AI business, highlighted several uses of AI to benefit everyone, such as computer vision to detect cancer cells and use AI to discover habitable planets outside the solar system. Google AI researchers have supported the use of AI in many recent projects, such as detecting diabetic retinopathy through eye images, or predicting floods or aftershocks before earthquakes.
