The office can discuss the problems of North-South relations openly and seek countermeasures, thus actively promoting the development of North-South relations and striding forward to peace, prosperity and reunification of the Korean peninsula.

In a speech, South Korean Unification Minister Zhao Mingjun said that the joint liaison office is a symbol of peace created by the North and the South, and a window for the DPRK to keep in touch at any time in the new era of peace. He hoped that it would become a cradle of national common prosperity.

Officials from north and South Korea jointly held the inauguration ceremony for the office. Zhao Mingjun and Li Shanquan subsequently jointly signed an agreement on the composition and operation of the joint liaison office.
