The U.S. will provide $1 billion in financing to Brazil to prevent Huawei from entering the local 5g network

During a visit to Brazil on Tuesday, the Export Import Bank of the United States (exim) and U.S. government officials signed a memorandum of understanding to identify possible financing opportunities for up to $1bn.

According to Reuters, U.S. officials told reporters when signing the agreement that the money could be used for Brazil to buy Telecom equipment from Huawei competitors.

Huawei, which has been operating in Brazil for 22 years, is a localized company with a good track record in high-quality products and network security, a Huawei spokesman said in a statement. In the past 30 years, we have never had a major cyber security incident in 170 countries in which we operate. We have the trust of our customers and partners, committed to Brazils digital transformation and open communication with all stakeholders.

Just this week, Sweden announced that Huawei and ZTE, the Chinese equipment manufacturers, were banned from participating in the countrys 5g network construction. If Brazils market is huge, it will undoubtedly be another big blow to Huawei.
