The Swedish post and Telecommunications Authority (PTS) said the conditions of the permit were set after an assessment by the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish security agency.
Under pressure from the United States, European governments have been assessing the role of Chinese companies in building the next-generation network. In July, the UK ordered Huawei equipment to be completely removed from its 5g network by 2027, becoming one of the first European countries to do so.
Huawei and ZTE did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Swedens decision. PTS said companies participating in the auction must remove Huawei and ZTE equipment from their existing core functions by January 1, 2025. The regulators so-called core functions refer to the construction of wireless access networks, transmission networks, core networks, and network services and maintenance equipment. (small)
