 Capital Airport West runway overhaul completed this month


This double festival holiday, the Capital Airport West runway overhaul project is still under intense construction, according to the plan, the overhaul will be completed and put into operation in late October. This is the first overhaul of the 43 year old West runway since the asphalt concrete overlay was carried out in 2000.

The introduction of digital supervision - Beidou navigation system in overhaul can realize the whole process monitoring of asphalt concrete production, transportation, paving and compaction, and its positioning accuracy can reach centimeter level. After the completion of the overhaul, the service life of the West runway will be increased to 20 years, which is 5 years longer than the design life of the previous technology. Recently, the Beijing News reporter visited the site of the West runway overhaul project.

Using new technologies

Cao Cheng, head of running and sliding engineering team of Capital Airport West runway overhaul series project, introduced that lake asphalt was used at the top layer of the West runway during the overhaul in 2000. According to the engineering technology construction method at that time, the service life of pavement is 15 years. In other words, in theory, the West runway has been in extended service since 2015.

Although it has exceeded the service life, the performance of the West runway is still very good, and the flatness can also meet the requirements of aircraft takeoff and landing. However, with the extension of service life, there are small cracks on the pavement.

Cao Cheng revealed that the overhaul uses a number of new technologies, such as Beidou navigation and positioning technology, intelligent runway, asphalt concrete customization, etc. after the overhaul, the service life of the West runway will be increased to 20 years, which is 5 years longer than the design life of the previous process.

According to Cao Cheng, the current ILS level of the West runway is a class I ILs, that is, if the visibility is above 800 meters, the aircraft can land; after the overhaul, the overall ILS system of the West runway will be upgraded to category II, and the aircraft can land when the visibility is more than 400 meters. In order to cooperate with this upgrade, the central line light of taxiway C was upgraded during the overhaul, and the blind landing system of West runway was upgraded by light encryption.

Beidou navigation monitoring for asphalt paving

In the West runway overhaul, the introduction of digital supervision, especially the Beidou navigation system in the process of digital construction is worth mentioning.

At the scene, the reporter saw that the roof or one side of each construction vehicle was equipped with a mushroom like probe to receive the Beidou navigation signal. In this way, the whole process of asphalt concrete production, transportation, paving and compaction can be monitored, and the positioning accuracy can reach centimeter level.

Cao Cheng said that after using Beidou navigation, engineers and technicians can monitor the working state of pavers in real time, and intervene quickly once the operation fails to meet the requirements, so as to improve the efficiency and quality of the project.

This kind of machine named digital monitoring equipment (paver) can also be installed with various sensors and display platforms according to the characteristics of asphalt paving process, so as to obtain the paving temperature, thickness, speed and other data during paving, and transmit them to the cloud platform to realize the collaborative operation of field machines.

Cao Cheng told reporters that any omission will lead to runway safety problems. Taking the paving temperature as an example, some asphalt paving temperature needs to be above 160 u2103, while others need to be above 170 u2103. Therefore, when the temperature sensor is installed on the paver, the asphalt temperature will be read by the sensor and uploaded to the background at any time. The technicians can monitor the whole construction process in real time.

Lake asphalt is added to the upper, middle and lower layers

In addition to the construction adjustment of 400m at both ends of the runway, the 2400m in the middle of the runway is also paid attention to in the construction process.

According to Cao Cheng, the overhaul of the West runway is divided into upper, middle and lower layers, with the upper layer of 6cm, the middle surface layer of 7cm and the lower layer of 8cm, and ensure that each layer of asphalt has sufficient compaction. During the overhaul, lake asphalt was added to the upper, middle and lower layers in proportion to the modified asphalt, so as to significantly improve the asphalt performance.

Compared with ordinary asphalt, lake asphalt has obvious advantages in high temperature performance. It can ensure that the runway will not have wheel rut in summer, and wheel rut is one of the most important factors threatening the safety of aircraft operation. According to Cao Cheng, lake asphalt is used in the pavement of Beijing urban area, such as Changan Street, the Third Ring Road and the Fourth Ring Road. This time, the capital airport will use this black weapon as a whole in the three-layer pavement materials to further improve the performance of the West runway.

Capital airport has become the first airport in China to use Lake Asphalt on all three pavement layers in runway overhaul.

Cao Cheng explained that the sensing equipment buried in the pavement mainly monitors whether the runway surface is deformed and whether there are diseases such as void. In addition, the long-term data accumulation can also provide data support for when the West runway will be maintained, when minor repair, medium repair and even major repair are needed.

The detectors on both sides of the pavement can monitor the uninvited guests on the runway, such as stones, birds and other objects that threaten aviation safety. It is called the airport runway foreign object (FOD) detection system. Cao Cheng told reporters that the foreign object detection system of the West runway is sensitive and can send out early warning to the staff in the first time after finding the foreign objects invading the runway. According to the early warning, the field management personnel can get on the way in time to remove the hidden dangers, so as to ensure the safety of flight taking off and landing.

In addition to the progress of construction technology, I feel that the staff have higher and higher requirements on themselves. Our work is more and more meticulous, and the courage is less and less. The boldness is getting smaller and smaller because of the higher requirements for construction accuracy, and the deviation rate has been controlled within 5% of the total.
