Chemical giant Huntsman: there will be more investment in China to focus on the downstream application of polyurethane

Huntsman was founded in the United States in 1970, covering chemicals, plastics, textiles, footwear, paints and coatings, building materials, etc. In 2019, Huntsmans business revenue is about $7 billion, nearly half of which comes from the polyurethane division. As the earliest global polyurethane giant to enter China, the company has invested more than 15 billion yuan in China.

In May this year, Huntsman Asia polyester polyol plant was officially put into operation in Taiwan, with an annual production capacity of 22000 tons. The chemical degradation remanufacturing recycling process is adopted in the plant. 60% of the product components come from recycled PET materials, and 440 million recycled 500 ml PET bottles can be consumed each year. In June, Tianjin polyurethane composite material factory was officially put into operation, using polyester polyols produced by Asian factories as raw materials to produce polyurethane products, with an annual output of 70000 tons.

In terms of follow-up development, pan Lumin said that Huntsman will have more investment in China and make breakthroughs in the downstream application of polyurethane. If we build an MDI factory, we can stop here to sell large quantities of raw materials, but we do not intend to stop here. Instead, we will provide specific solutions for different downstream applications, thus reflecting the process and value. He said that after the epidemic, polyurethane will have more opportunities in downstream industries such as modern agriculture, soft packaging, cold chain and automobile, and the company will follow the trend and provide more solutions for heat preservation, food supply chain, environmental friendly adhesives and automotive materials. Taking the recent hot cold chain industry as an example, polyurethane as a good insulation material can play an important role in food transportation and storage, but fire prevention is still a big challenge. Huntsman has also launched corresponding solutions for this kind of industry security problems. Pan Lumin mentioned that the polyurethane products produced by the companys polyester polyols can give consideration to both the thermal insulation performance and the flame retardant effect. Compared with traditional thermal insulation materials such as polystyrene board and rock wool, the thermal insulation performance of buildings can be improved by more than 50%, and the fire protection rating of buildings can be upgraded from B2 to B1, the highest level of organic materials.
