The U.S. recognizes that 5g strategy has made mistakes

The failure of us 5g strategy

At the beginning of 5g, the United States has been a solid supporter of millimeter wave, but this supporter has been shaken completely.

The trump administration announced a plan on Monday to auction off 100 MHz medium band spectrum originally used for military purposes, which will be put into commercial use by mid-2022, thus expanding the coverage of 5g networks in the United States, Reuters reported. This move not only proves that the 5g strategic choice of the United States is a failure, but also shows that the millimeter wave road is not feasible at the current stage.

Millimeter wave, with the characteristics of large bandwidth and narrow beam, was only used in military fields such as satellite communication and radar positioning in the past. Although it has outstanding advantages, such as high-speed and high-capacity, millimeter wave can provide a carrier bandwidth of 400-800mhz, which is dozens of times higher than that of 20MHz in 4G, and can increase the transmission rate of 5g network to 10Gbps.

However, the disadvantages of millimeter wave are obvious, such as short transmission distance, and easily affected by buildings, people, plants, and even raindrops. These high frequency ranges are not suitable for mobile broadband services. Due to the lack of coverage and mobility support (especially in NLOS environment), the application of MMW in mobile broadband is not feasible.

According to the data, among the 63 operators that have opened 5g network in the world, only 4 operators are using millimeter wave, including 3 American operators and 1 Uruguayan operator.

Moreover, after more than a year of fact verification, the actual use of millimeter wave 5g in the United States is not ideal. In Verizons pilot millimeter wave 5g network, even leaves can not penetrate, one tree rule has become a joke in the communication industry.

Michael kratsios, a white house consultant and chief technology officer, said the FCC would auction 100MHz medium band spectrum for military use from December 2021 to companies such as Verizon communications and at & T, and the US wireless industry would be able to use the spectrum in the summer of 2022.

In my opinion, the release of the U.S. military intermediate frequency spectrum is also a helpless move. If we do not make up for this prison, it may lead to 5g lagging behind in the United States, which is more than worth the loss.

Best choice: 5g if spectrum deployment

The loss of 5g strategy in the United States also proves that Chinas strategy of deploying 5g in intermediate frequency spectrum from the beginning is correct.

In my opinion, if spectrum deployment 5g can not only give full play to the advantages of domestic technology and industrial chain, but also promote the deployment and application of 5g in China.

According to the official data of the Ministry of industry and information technology, by the end of June this year, more than 400000 5g base stations have been constructed and opened in China, and 66 million users have actually connected to 5g network. According to the French echo, the number of 5g users in the United States is 1 million, almost one percent of Chinas 5g users.

At the same time, with the help of the three major operators, 5g applications have been constantly riding the wind and waves, achieving multi-point flowering in vertical industries such as industry, medical care, transportation, etc., and creating a series of industry benchmarks.

This proves that Chinas 5g technology path choice is correct. Moreover, as the first country in the world to make clear the application of intermediate frequency spectrum, Chinas successful experience of 5g is not just blooming in the wall, but fragrant, which is worth learning from abroad.

Not long ago, GSMA published an article praising China for its best demonstration of 5g spectrum resources. The four operators in China have obtained corresponding 5g spectrum in the form of administrative allocation, which is the result of investigation and consultation by the Chinese government and regulatory authorities. It has been proved that these frequency bands are very suitable for the needs of the three operators themselves, and are of great benefit to their respective 5g deployment.
