Tiktok is stepping up lobbying in the United States, spending $500000 in the second quarter

In order to reverse the current situation, tiktok wants to strengthen its Washington office. On August 3, it announced a recruitment announcement for multiple positions in government affairs, when the trump administration was considering whether to ban the app or force tiktoks parent company, byte hopping, to sell its U.S. business.

Tiktok says the size of its US team has tripled since the beginning of 2020. Tiktok will not leave. We are committed to the long-term success of our very dedicated employees who work every day, making tiktok a unique and exciting place on the Internet, tiktok said in a statement

Tiktok has been under constant pressure from the trump administration. Most importantly, trump threatened to shut down tiktok if its parent company did not sell its U.S. operations to a U.S. company by September 15. In addition, on August 6, trump signed two executive orders prohibiting US residents from doing business with tiktok and Tencents wechat app, which came into effect 45 days later.

Microsoft has been in contact and negotiation with tiktok over the acquisition of tiktoks businesses in the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, according to Bloomberg. According to reports, tiktok has more than 100 million users in the United States alone.

In fact, before trump began threatening to ban tiktok, the company had been stepping up its lobbying efforts. Its parent company, byte hopping, said it spent $500000 on federal level lobbying in the United States in the second quarter of 2020, a new record compared with $300000 in the first quarter of 2020.

Tiktoks Washington lobbying campaign began last year, when the company wanted to facilitate meetings between its executives and prominent members of Congress. It hired Michael Beckerman, former president of the Internet Associations trade group, to provide policy advice and David Cuban as an external lobbyist. During the 2016 US presidential campaign, Kemble was a senior adviser to trumps campaign.

In recent months, the company has also hired Michael hacker, assistant to former House majority leader Jim clyburn, former Marine Corps liaison officer for congressmen, and former Internet association lobbyist Michael bloom.

Tiktok is looking for lobbyists with established relationships and experience working with Congress, administration and related agencies, according to a recruitment announcement posted on daybook, a public policy employment website.
