Towards our well-off life, returning the river to the people, happy life extending on both sides of the Pujiang River in Shanghai (source: video synthesis)

Photographer Lao Wu, a native of Shanghai, lives near the riverside of Yangpu. He has been paying close attention to the renovation of this area in recent years, and has also used his lens to record the changes along the riverside.

Photographer Wu maokai: Yangpu Binjiang used to be large factories and docks, so the people couldnt walk in and could not see the river. Now, after the reconstruction, the people can come in and see the water.

Yangpu Binjiang used to be one of the birthplaces of modern Chinese industry. Along the river bank, there were more than 300 enterprises such as shipbuilding, textile and power generation. In the 1990s, with the adjustment of Shanghais industrial structure, many enterprises closed down and turned into industrial rust belt. Although the people living nearby live next to the river, they have never realized the dream of water loving for several generations. In 2015, the Yangtze River Delta heavy industry project was launched.

Xu Jin, chief engineer of Shanghai Yangpu Binjiang company: on the one hand, it is necessary to turn the closed industrial coastline into an open and life coastline that citizens can fully enjoy; on the other hand, we also hope that through our design and construction, we can continue the original characteristics and cultural context of this area.

During the renovation, 66 industrial remains have been preserved one by one after investigation. Yangshupu Waterworks, with a history of 137 years, was once the biggest breakpoint for the connection of Binjiang river. Up to now, it still undertakes a quarter of the water supply task in Shanghai. Instead of passing through the building, the construction personnel set up a hydrophilic trestle outside the water plant, which not only protected the historical buildings, but also opened the riverside channel for the public.

Here, industries and cranes are kept in place, coal crushers and other equipment become the landscape along the river; coal scuttles weighing coal are turned upside down and become pavilions, and the activated industrial remains radiate new life. Photographer Lao Wu likes it more now.

Photographer Wu maokai: these old factories, history and nostalgia are well preserved. In this way, we have things and objects to tell children, so that we can have a good inheritance.

In November 2019, general secretary Xi Jinping came to Shanghai Yangpu District Binjiang public space inspection, and put forward the important idea of peoples city peoples building, peoples city for the people:

In the final analysis, our city is the peoples city, a happy paradise for the people. The public space should be expanded and the quality of public space should be improved. Let the people have a sense of gain and happiness here. I wish you a happy life.

Zuo Weidong, executive deputy director of Binjiang Office of Yangpu District, Shanghai: the general secretarys speech, we should implement it into the development and construction management of our whole Binjiang District. How to make the common people have their sense of happiness and gain in our whole public space, we all think about some details in some good concept design.

Today, after the transformation of Yangpu riverside belt, not only provides a place for leisure and entertainment, but also a very intimate convenience service. Walking along the riverside, on average, there is a party and masses service station every 700 meters, providing space for tourists to and from the city.

Ms. Wang, a Shanghai citizen: its very hot outside and the sun is very hot. I can have a rest here. I have this kind of books (which can be read). Some people can take their meals at noon. They can also warm them up. Its very good. Its very humanized now.

Up to now, the 47.7km waterfront public space in Shanghai has been open to the public. From the original docks and the river bank closed, to the river returning to the people and changing scenery, seeing the river, touching the green, tasting the history and enjoying the culture has become a comfortable life for every Shanghai citizen.

Mr. Li, a citizen of Shanghai: there are more and more places for ordinary people to go, and life and leisure are becoming more and more convenient. Therefore, we people are enjoying more and more happiness.

Shanghai citizen Ms. Yang: living in Shanghai, we feel more and more comfortable.
