Although Korean manufacturers have always occupied the market highland in the field of OLED smart phone screens, thanks to the popularity of full screen smartphones and the arrival of 5g smart phones, apple, Huawei, oppo and other major mobile phone brands have increased the use of OLED screens, and the demand for OLED panels has also increased year by year. Now, domestic flexible screens, led by BOE, have been launched in an all-round way To achieve self-sufficiency of small and medium-sized OLED screens, the monopoly position of Korean manufacturers has been broken.
In 2019, Huaweis first folding screen mobile phone mate x adopts BOEs flexible AMOLED screen, and p30pro and BOE are also one of the OLED suppliers. In addition, recent market news about BOE entering apple and Samsungs supply chain has been endless.
As one of the representatives of Chinas display industry, the number of China screens exported by Jingdong to the world has increased dramatically. According to the latest data from omdia, a market research company, BOE will ship 39.1 million OLED panels in 2019, including 22.1 million rigid displays and 17 million flexible displays. Compared with 2018, the companys rigid panel shipment increased by 12 times, while the flexible panel shipment increased by more than 4 times.
The mass production supply of domestic OLED flexible screens not only provides more choices for domestic mobile phone brands, but also enables them to gradually get rid of the situation of being controlled by others. However, reviewing the hard pioneer history of BOE and the Chinese mainland show that the development of industry almost overlaps.
Nearly bankrupt restructuring 27 years ago
In 1992, at the age of 35, Wang Dongsheng took over the Beijing Electronic Tube Factory (the 774 factory affiliated to the former Ministry of electronic industry) which was on the verge of bankruptcy. The following year, Wang Dongsheng officially founded Beijing Oriental Electronics Group Co., Ltd.
As for why he entered the field of semiconductor display technology, Wang Dongsheng once said, in those years, integrated circuits replaced electronic tubes, and the Internet era accelerated. We do electronic tubes, and we have deep feelings about this. The experience at that time made us realize that technical iteration is very important for the development of enterprises. If we do not do flat panel display, once CRT is replaced on a large scale, Chinas TV industry which has developed for many years will be rapidly eliminated. If you want to do a good job in an industry, you must actively participate in the process of technological innovation, and you must master the core technology independently.
Therefore, facing the monopoly of Japanese and South Korean enterprises, after 14 consecutive years of losses, they still spend billions of dollars on R & D every year. At one time, it was also known as the king of money burning. Finally, innovation brought vitality to BOE and made remarkable achievements in many fields. After 27 years of restructuring, BOE has now become the global leader in liquid crystal panel (LCD) by squeezing out South Koreas LG display (LGD), which used to be the dominant industry. Moreover, BOE and csot hold nearly 50% of the global production capacity.
0led market in 3 years
Although in the field of OLED, Chinese manufacturers represented by BOE are striving to catch up with Samsung and lgdisplay, there is still a huge gap in high-end display technologies such as OLED. The reason we have to mention is that BOE entered the OLED market much later than TPK, Samsung and LG.
In 1996, TPK CHENHONG became the first display company to display AMOLED technology in the world; in 2007, lgdisplay launched a 55 inch OLED TV for the first time. BOE began to produce OLED only in 2017, when Samsungs backward technology was used.
But the inevitable trend of the market from LCD to OLED makes BOE realize the necessity of accelerating research and development. Taking the mainstream AMOLED technology as an example, BOE has successively deployed two 6th generation flexible AMOLED production lines in Chengdu and Mianyang, Sichuan Province. Among them, Chengdu line is the first fully flexible AMOLED production line in China and the second generation of flexible AMOLED production line in the world.
Up to now, the company has announced to invest in four sixth generation flexible AMOLED production lines, with a total investment of 186 billion yuan. Among them, the first phase of Chengdu production line has reached full capacity, and the second phase is in the process of climbing; the sixth generation AMOLED production line in Mianyang has been put into mass production; the sixth generation AMOLED production line project in Chongqing has been started and is expected to be put into operation in 2021; the Fuzhou project is under planning.
Up to now, BOEs AMOLED panel market share ranks second in the world. According to a report by DSCC (display supply chain consultants), a consultancy on panel supply, BOE is expected to continue to double its share of global revenue from OLED panels used in smartphones this year.
Global market blueprint of domestic screen
This year, Samsung and lgdisplay announced that they would stop production of LCD panels. In addition to retaining part of the local production capacity, the two companies basically bid farewell to the LCD market and turned to high-end display markets such as OLED and qled. This means that the competition in the OLED market has become more intense.
However, it is undeniable that Chinese panel manufacturers are rising rapidly and catching up with and surpassing at an alarming speed. In recent years, BOE, TCL Huaxing, Tianma, weixinuo and other companies have made great efforts to build high generation OLED production lines such as 5.5 generation / 6 generation, and have gradually been recognized by international famous brand enterprises. According to public information, so far, Chinese mainland has 5 BOE (including construction), 3 Huaxing photoelectric, 5 Tianma, 4 visa, and 26 OLED production lines including Huaxi, huofei, and softwood.
According to market estimation, the global OLED panel market size will be 22.83 billion US dollars in 2019, and it is expected to reach 46.55 billion US dollars by 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.9%. Industry experts predict that by 2023, the total capacity of Chinese mainland OLED panels will be nearly 46%, and will replace South Korea as the worlds largest supplier of OLED panels.
In the face of the continuous expansion of the new industrial scale, the government has accelerated the pace of investment in new industries. It can be predicted that Chinese enterprises will carry the competitive capital of LCD, OLED, mini led, micro led and other emerging display panel technologies to complete the whole industrial chain from upstream equipment to downstream products, so as to lay out the global market blueprint.
