AI patent war! This year, Amazons interesting machine learning and AR technology.

There are two types of companies that try to charge more and those that try to charge less. We will be the second. Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO

When Jeff Bezos founded Amazon website in 1994, it was just an online book sales website. During this period, Barnes&Noble, Waldenbooks and CrownBooks were the leaders of the American shopping center bookstore industry.

Now, for most people, Amazons name has almost become a synonym for online retail, and now it has expanded to cloud computing, electronics, technology products and entertainment. As of August 3, 2008, Amazon had a market capitalization of $897.47 billion (6147.67 billion yuan), making it hard to believe that it only sells books.

Amazon has been promoting innovation. As new inventions emerge, some patents help companies to have competitive advantages in technology and products to attract more customers. According to the American patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), patent refers to the right of proprietary invention, a right to prohibit the manufacture, use, sale, or sale of the invention in the United States, or the introduction of the invention to the United States.

As of March 20, 2018, Amazon had 7,717 U.S. patents in two commercial entities, Amazon Technologies and Amazon. From the chart below, we can see that Amazon technology is one of the 15 companies that have been granted the largest number of patents in 2017.

Some successful Amazon patents in 2018.

Amazon has thousands of inventions, and these inventions have already been patented. It includes staff monitoring AR glasses (employeesurveillanceARgoggles), real time accent translation (areal-timeaccenttranslator), mechanical arm delivery (roboticarmstossingwarehouseitems), one key purchase (one-clickbuying), UAV and so on. Lets take a look at these outstanding innovations of Amazon.

AR glasses for improving distribution (or monitoring employees)?

Date of patent: August 2, 2018

Date of submission: March 20, 2017

Assignee: Amazon Technology

ARGoggles

Features: Amazon recently patented an AR glasses that can be used to track userswork. The patent is called AugmentedRealityUserinterfacefacilitatingfulfillment. According to the patent application, this is a wearable device, such as AR glasses worn on the users head. The user interface is presented on one or more lenses of augmented reality glasses that help employees locate items in Amazons distribution center. In addition, AR glasses also have a function: to provide people with a distribution centers destination direction. This helps them find their destinations easily because all relevant information is presented on the lens.

ARGoggles work structure

The patent has been criticized for fears it could infringe on the privacy of warehouse employees and track their every move. However, Amazon defended the application, saying it had nothing to do with employee monitoring. Since it is a patent, there is no guarantee that it will really enter the market.

Robot arm delivery of goods

Date of patent: July 17, 2018

Date of submission: September 29, 2015

Assignee: Amazon Technology

Features: last month, Amazon won a patent called Robotictossingofitemsininventorysystem in the inventory system. According to the patent application, robot arm or manipulator can be used to throw objects in the inventory system. The throwing strategy of the robot arm may include: the robot arm obtains the information of moving and releasing the grasping object, and moves the object to the receiving position.

The use of mechanical arms to deliver items to the destination can help improve the throughput of the inventory system. This is possible because the robotic arm will help reduce the time it takes to get the object directly on the surface. The content of the patent is: the delivery strategy may be at least to a certain extent based on a database, which contains information and features of objects and similar items, for example, some information that shows whether these items were delivered in the past.

Robotic arm

Amazons goal is to respond to the challenges facing modern inventory systems such as supply chain distribution centers, airport baggage systems, and the need for inventory items.

The patent has come under criticism because one example of the application is a dwarf statue, which some fear could lead to ridicule of short people. But Amazon argues that our purpose is simply to illustrate the mobile products of robotic arms, which should not be extended beyond the context.

Real time accent translation

Date of patent: June 21, 2018

Date of submission: December 21, 2016

Assignee: Amazon Technology

Features: in June this year, Amazon won a patent for audio system applications called Accenttranslation, which would help to translate the speakers accent into a listeners accent. The purpose of this application is to eliminate possible communication barriers due to different accents, which are sometimes difficult to understand.

Accent translation system

The accent translation system collects audio samples from different sources, such as telephone, television, film, radio, etc. Each audio sample will be associated with at least one accent sample set that appears in its database. For example, German accents will be associated with a sample set of German accents.

In a two party dialog box, the acquired audio will be analyzed, and if it is associated with a widely preserved accent, the audio from both sides will be output according to the accent of the other party. The possibilities of this application are endless. A major use case is aimed at the customer care industry, and people often have to talk to people with different accents.

UAV Based on human gestures and voice commands for parcel delivery

Date of submission: July 18, 2016

Assignee: Amazon Technology

Features: earlier this year, Amazon applied for a patent for an unmanned aerial vehicle called Humaninteractionwithunmannedaerialvehicles, which would use human gestures and voice instructions for parcels. Amazon UAVs use propulsion technology to help manage the speed, trajectory and direction of UAVs.

According to the patent description, it is an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with propulsion, sensor equipment and management systems. The management system is configured to receive human gestures through sensor devices and act as a response to instruct propulsion devices to influence and adjust aircraft behavior. Human gestures include visible gestures, audible gestures and other gestures that can be recognized by UAVs.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) work structure

The concept of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) began in the 2013 Amazon CEO Geoff Bezos, which promised to develop a 30 - minute delivery - to - door unmanned aircraft with a weight of 2.25 kilograms.

Amazons patent application clearly shows its efforts and determination to invent sophisticated technology to optimize its business, which allows Amazon to offer price competitive products to benefit customers. As Amazon focuses on machine learning, UAVs and robotic arms will make the day-to-day work of equipment workers more convenient and efficient. In fact, Amazon has been expanding its efforts to combine enhanced reality technology with AR eyeglasses equipment to further improve efficiency. Real-time voice translation can ease communication barriers, allowing Amazon to cover a wider range of areas and possibly provide a seamless customer service experience in the future.
