For a non stealth fighter like F-15, strong EW capability is an important guarantee for its survivability. The f-15c / D / E fighter is equipped with an / alq-135 electronic countermeasure system, which was designed in the 1970s and is mainly used to counter the radar technology before and after the 1980s. Now, the threats it faces are more diverse and complex, and its adaptability is insufficient.
To this end, the US military and BAE Systems are developing a new generation of eagles passive / active warning and survival system (epaws). This is an integrated equipment integrating radar, missile early warning and electronic countermeasure functions. It was developed for the F-15E modification and became the standard configuration of f-15ex.
Limited to the basic design of F-15, various pods are added to improve the information perception ability without significant changes in avionics. For example, LANTIRN (Blue Shield), tiger eye navigation / targeting pod, an / aaq-33 sniper advanced targeting pod (ATP), etc. It can provide day and night remote target recognition, intelligence collection, surveillance and investigation functions.
In addition, the next generation Legion pod pods for the F-15, F-16, etc. are under development. In early July this year, the U.S. Air Force Equipment Command announced that an f-15c fighter launched an aim-9x combat bomb using the detection data from the Legion pod. According to the plan, the pod will start to have initial combat capability this year.

The Legion pod is equipped with an / asg-34 infrared search and tracking (IRST) sensor, which adopts passive detection mechanism, and will not send out radiation signal actively like radar. That is to say, it can be used as the backup of radar and work normally in complex electromagnetic interference environment. At the same time, it can reduce the risk of being detected by the other partys alarm equipment, and enhance its own survivability. Moreover, the radar stealth design has little effect on the IRST, so we can find the stealth fighters which are invisible to the traditional radar.
Another advantage of the Legion pod is its open interface, which can be used alone or in conjunction with other sensors to deal with threats. A part of payload space is reserved to accommodate more sensors, EW equipment or communication equipment in the future. Compared with the existing pod, the overall performance has been significantly improved.
Note: the f-15sa testing machine is equipped with double pylon on the 1 / 9 hanging point, which can carry 12 aim-120 medium range missiles, two auxiliary fuel tanks and Reconnaissance Pod.
