Apple started assembling iPhones in India

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The move is reported to be in line with Apples goal of increasing production in India. Most iPhones are still made in China. According to the report, the assembly of devices in India enables smart phone suppliers such as apple to avoid about 20% import tariff imposed by the Indian government on imported electronic products.

At a shareholders meeting earlier this year, Tim Cook, Apples chief executive, said Apple would open its first retail store in India next year. (Chen Chen)
