Media: why Chinese Netizens feel relieved after the announcement of closing the Chengdu Consulate

Since the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced the closure of the US Consulate General in Chengdu on the morning of July 24, Chinas Internet has become a sea of joy. Not only is microblog hot search at the top of the list, but also about jokes like the above.

Some netizens think that the consulate road in Chengdu should be renamed no (U.S.) consulate road; more people have come up with suggestions on how to use the consulate road in Chengdu after it is idle: some people say that they can open a hot pot shop to make a string of incense, while others say that they can directly transform it into secret room escape because its a place where ghosts live.

Jokes are jokes, but the emotions behind them are real.

After the first provocation and brutal closure of the Chinese Consulate General in Houston, the United States may not have thought that Chinas counter-measures would be so quick, let alone that China would choose the Chengdu consulate for operation.

Even some American media have acknowledged that the Consulate General in Chengdu is of great significance to the US antenna radiation to the wider western region of China.

To be fair, few people in China want to ruin Sino US relations.

It is a clear judgment of Chinas high level on Sino US relations and a basic understanding of ordinary people at the level of both sides. This is the conclusion drawn by the Chinese people from the decades of reform and opening up - not only to the United States, but also to embrace the world.

After all, the bad relations between China and the United States have far-reaching effects, and no one can stay out of it. However, at the same time, the current US governments rampage against the cornerstone of Sino US relations is reshaping the perspective and mood of the Chinese people towards the United States.

How the situation will develop has attracted great attention, and what cards the United States will play in the next step is still unknown. However, there are two things that can be determined: first, in the face of unwarranted repression and blackmail from the United States, China will certainly fight back to each other; second, the Chinese peoples maintenance and support for national interests and foreign policy will continue to be as unswerving as this time. Some American politicians attempts to divide Chinas internal affairs or even sow dissension are just wishful and futile.

China closes U.S. Consulate General in Chengdu (source: ~)

On the morning of July 24, 2020, the Chinese Ministry of foreign affairs informed the US embassy in China that China had decided to revoke the license for the establishment and operation of the US Consulate General in Chengdu, and put forward specific requirements for the Consulate General to stop all business and activities.

On July 21, the United States unilaterally provoked the incident and suddenly asked China to close its Consulate General in Houston, which seriously violated international law, basic norms of international relations and relevant provisions of Sino US Consular treaties, and seriously damaged Sino US relations. Chinas above-mentioned measures are a legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable acts of the US side, in line with international law and basic norms of international relations, and in line with diplomatic practices.

The current situation between China and the United States is something that China does not want to see, and the responsibility lies entirely with the United States. We once again urge the US side to immediately withdraw the relevant wrong decision and create the necessary conditions for the return of bilateral relations to normal.
