 Brain computer interface opens new brain hole: musk wants music to be transmitted to brain through chip

Have you ever imagined that you can feel wonderful music in your brain without turning on or wearing any playback device? This sounds like the plot of a science fiction movie may soon become a reality.

Recently, during an interaction with computer scientist Austin Howard on twitter, musk revealed that his company neuralink may develop some kind of implanted chip in the future, through which music can directly flow into users brain nerves. But he didnt disclose the details, so its not clear how the product will bypass the ear nerve and deliver music directly to the brain.

Earlier, musk hinted on twitter that neuralinks chip would be able to retrain certain parts of the brain to treat depression and addiction.

Previously, neuralink has publicly introduced its N1 sensor chips, which can be implanted into the brain through a two inch incision through a robot, and the operation is said to be less than an hour. But at present, this implantation has only been tested in animals, and has not entered the clinical stage of human body.

For this brain computer interface technology, musk said the chip developed by neuralink will first focus on medical applications, such as dealing with the impact of brain diseases such as epilepsy. After that, brain chips will be updated to develop a symbiotic relationship between AI and humans. Eventually, the implanted chip will protect us from becoming an endangered species.

Neuralink may not be famous compared to Musks Tesla and SpaceX.

In June 2016, musk once discussed a science fiction concept neurallace, that is, human brain and machine interaction. Soon after, musk, along with eight other co founders, founded a neuroscience company responsible for developing implantable brain computer interface technology, neuralink.

When neuralink was founded, it said it planned to develop a device that could be implanted into the brain, which would help people with certain brain injuries, such as stroke. Musk also said on his blog that neuralink plans to bring the device to market in about four years.

But in fact, neuralink hasnt had any big public events since it was founded. Until July 17, 2019, neuralink held a large-scale conference, at which musk introduced the breakthrough new progress of neuralinks brain computer interface system.

Neuralinks new system does less damage to the brain and can transmit more data than previous technologies. Meanwhile, neuralinks team has performed at least 19 robotic operations on animals and successfully placed circuits called threads that allow animals to control machines with their brains, with a success rate of about 87%. According to musk, the neuralink team succeeded in getting a monkey to control a computer through its brain.

At a media conference after the meeting, musk revealed that neuralink would be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as early as next year to start clinical trials on humans.

So far, neuralinks planned clinical trials in humans may have entered the countdown phase. More details about the neuralink chip, according to musk twitter, will be released on August 28.
