D614g mutation of new coronavirus in Xinfadi, Beijing

Los Alamos National Laboratory published a paper online in the top academic journal Cell on July 2. This study believes that their research results show that sars-cov-2 mutant carrying s protein d614g has become the most common form of global pandemic, and the mutated virus has been proved to be more infectious.

The researchers, from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, Duke University in North Carolina and the University of Sheffield epidemic team, analyzed genetic samples published by gisaid.

The team also found that a higher viral load than before mutation suggested that d614g mutation was associated with higher viral nucleic acid levels in the upper respiratory tract. But the paper also pointed out, we found no significant association between d614g and disease severity. The research team also proposed that g614 mutation pseudovirus was associated with higher infectivity. Quantitative analysis showed that the virus particles carrying g614 mutation had significantly higher infectivity titer than the corresponding d614, increasing by 2.6 to 9.3 times, which may explain why it is easier to spread globally.
