Canadian leaders comment on the case

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry has clarified Chinas position on the latest progress of the case of Kang Mingkai and Michael. After examination according to law, on June 19, the second branch of Beijing Municipal Peoples Procuratorate sued Kang Mingkai, the defendant of Canadian nationality, to Beijing Second Intermediate Peoples court for the crime of spying on state secrets and information abroad. On the same day, after examination according to law, the peoples Procuratorate of Dandong City, Liaoning Province sued Michael spaver, the defendant of Canadian nationality, to the intermediate peoples Court of Dandong City for the crime of overseas spying and illegally providing state secrets. If the facts of their crimes are clear and the evidence is accurate and sufficient, they shall be investigated for criminal responsibility.

I would like to emphasize once again that China is a country ruled by law. Chinese judicial organs handle cases according to law. China firmly opposes any country or organization interfering in Chinas internal affairs and Chinas judicial sovereignty under any pretext. There is no basis for Canadas accusation that China is arbitrarily detaining Canadian citizens. Canadas attempts to engage in microphone diplomacy and pull gangs to put pressure on China are in vain. China urges Canada to immediately stop making irresponsible remarks, earnestly respect Chinas judicial sovereignty and not interfere in Chinas handling of cases according to law in any way.
