According to Taiwan media, this is the seventh time this year that a U.S. warship has passed the Taiwan Strait. The previous 6 times were January 16th, February 15th, March 25th, April 10th, April 23rd and May 13th, respectively.

The Ministry of foreign affairs and the Ministry of national defense of the peoples Republic of China have responded to the incident of US warships crossing the Taiwan Strait many times before. Geng Shuang, a spokesman for Chinas foreign ministry, said at a regular press conference held in Beijing on January 17 that China has closely followed and fully grasped the situation of US warships sailing across the Taiwan Strait.

Geng Shuang stressed that the Taiwan issue concerns Chinas sovereignty and territorial integrity and is the most important and sensitive issue in China US relations. We urge the US side to abide by the one China principle and the provisions of the three Sino US joint communiques, and handle Taiwan related issues prudently and properly, so as not to damage Sino US relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
