The HKSAR government is convinced that under the leadership of smellan, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will strive to further enhance Hong Kongs market competitiveness and consolidate Hong Kongs position as the preferred fund-raising and risk management platform in the region.

Smelen was reappointed as a member of the board of directors of HKEx in February 2020 for a term of about two years, until the end of the companys annual general meeting in 2022.

In 2018, she became the first female chairman of the Hong Kong stock exchange, served as a member of the Hong Kong Financial Leadership Committee and served as the chairman of the Hong Kong Financial Development Council. She was vice chairman of the CSRC from 2001 to 2004.
