Vietnam claims that China has violated its sovereignty in Sansha City, South China Sea

Geng Shuang, spokesman of the Ministry of foreign affairs of China

[Global Times comprehensive report] in response to Chinas announcement of the establishment of Xisha district and Nansha District in Sansha City, South China Sea, Vietnam protested and believed that Chinas move violates Vietnams sovereignty. In response, Geng Shuang, a spokesman for Chinas foreign ministry, said at a regular press conference on the 20th that China has always firmly opposed Vietnams words and actions that undermine Chinas sovereignty and rights in the South China Sea, and will continue to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard Chinas sovereignty and rights.

Vietnam issued a statement on the same day asking the Chinese government to withdraw its decision to set up a new administrative region on the disputed islands in the South China Sea, claiming that Chinas decision seriously infringes Vietnams sovereignty, Reuters reported Tuesday.

Geng Shuang said Tuesday that with the approval of the State Council, Xisha district and Nansha District will be set up in Sansha City, Hainan Province, which is a normal administrative division of China and a matter within Chinas sovereignty. He stressed that China has sovereignty over the Xisha and Nansha Islands and their surrounding waters, as well as sovereignty and jurisdiction over the relevant waters and the seabed subsoil. The Chinese government, in accordance with domestic laws and regulations, has chosen and published the names of some Xisha and Nansha Islands and reefs and the names of sea floor names in the sea areas under its jurisdiction. This is a normal and routine measure for China to strengthen and standardize its marine management in accordance with law and in line with international law and practices.

Recently, some western countries and media hype the issue of the South China Sea from time to time. The U.S. Department of defense has recently issued a statement accusing China of the collision of Vietnamese fishing boats with Chinese coast guard ships in the waters of the Xisha Islands.

Wu Qian, a spokesman for Chinas Ministry of defense, said Tuesday that the facts of the incident are clear and the responsibilities are clear. China is carrying out official law enforcement activities in accordance with laws and regulations within its own sovereignty. The U.S. Department of defense, ignoring the facts and confusing the public, made unwarranted accusations against China, intending to sow discord, muddle up the water in the South China Sea and make excuses for its military presence, which the Chinese military firmly opposed. We call on the US side to stop making false accusations against China and to stop meddling in the South China Sea issue so as not to cause further damage to the regional situation.
