As the largest group of overseas students in Australia, Chinese students have been impacted by the epidemic.

On February 1 this year, Australia announced that non Australian citizens who transit the mainland of China within 14 days are not allowed to enter Australia. Many Chinese students who return home for the Spring Festival have to transfer to other countries for 14 days before returning to Australia for school. Covelin, who is studying for a masters degree at the University of Melbourne, is one of the curve back to Australia groups.

The self account of Colin

A kind of

On March 20, at the end of the third week of the new semester of Melbourne University, I stepped into the campus for the first time. This is my first time in school this semester, and probably the last time. Starting next week, all courses at the University of Melbourne will be converted to online courses. The school has sent out an email to inform students not to come to the school next week and do a good job of self-protection at home. In fact, many students have not come to school for classes, and the campus seems very cold.

Looking back on this time back to school experience, full of too many unexpected.

On January 13, I took the flight home. Among the passengers, there were many Chinese Australians. This years Spring Festival coincides with the summer vacation of primary and secondary schools in Australia. Many Chinese who have not returned home for many years due to their emigration to the southern continent intend to take advantage of this rare holiday to bring their children back to their country for reunion. For me, this Spring Festival is also the only time I can stay in China in 2020, which is also a great expectation. During the flight, novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan is a topic among many travelers. But at that time, probably everyone, including me, didnt realize that it would have such a big impact on us.

On the 28th day of the 12th lunar month, after several entanglements, I cancelled the original plan to travel with my friends on the Lantern Festival; on the 29th day of the 12th lunar month, I cancelled the reunion of my local classmates; after the first lunar month, I got up every day to care about the epidemic situation

I originally booked a flight back to Melbourne at the end of February, but the epidemic is developing rapidly. Many overseas agents are suggesting leaving as soon as possible. Although I was worried, I thought it was not the seventh day of the first month, so I didnt need to go so early. I planned to go to the middle of February first. For the sake of safety, the original connecting ticket is also going to be changed to direct flight. But at the peak of the airlines withdrawal and endorsement, it failed to contact customer service for many times, thinking that it was too early, even if.

On the afternoon of February 1, the most worrying thing happened. Australia announced that non Australian citizens crossing the mainland of China within 14 days could not enter the country, and the ban came into effect immediately. Within an hour of the announcement of the ban, several Chinese students who had arrived at Australian Customs had been denied entry. Other Australian temporary visa holders waiting at Chinese airports have been denied boarding by airlines. There are also temporary visa holders who successfully boarded the plane, who received more severe punishment after arriving in Australia on February 2 - Visa cancellation and immediate repatriation.

Unlike the United States, where most schools are already open, Australias schools were just around the corner at that time, which was the peak of overseas students return journey. However, the Australian government has not given a clear answer to the question whether it can enter China after 14 days stay in a third country. Some of the temporary signing holders cant wait for the official reply from the government and go to a third country on their own. Thailand, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia and other places that have implemented visa free or landing visa for China have become popular choices. And I chose to stay in China for a while to watch the situation, after all, it was a month before the start of school.

Two weeks later, Australian Prime Minister Morrison announced that the ban would continue. While receiving the bad news, there is also good news: most of the first batch of temporary visa holders of curvilinear return to Australia have successfully entered the country. The only difference is that the original simple check-in procedures have become extremely long, probably because the airlines are not willing to take the risk of transporting unqualified passengers into the country.

With the help of the first batch of crab eaters, I began to plan to transit to a third country.

On February 22, the ban continued, and I boarded a flight to Bangkok, Thailand. The normally crowded airport is very cold, and there are only three international flights on that day. In sharp contrast, Bangkoks streets were full of traffic. At that time, 35 confirmed cases in Thailand did not seem to cause public panic.

On the taxi returning to the hotel after buying supplies, the drivers cough from time to time made me nervous. After returning to the hotel, I took a bath immediately, disinfected the clothes with alcohol, and never dared to go out of the hotel again. Thailand has always been a popular tourist destination, but I didnt expect my first trip to Siam to be like this.

In two weeks in Bangkok, the global epidemic is changing rapidly. Italy, South Korea and Iran became new disaster areas when the daily increase in China dropped to single digits. On March 3 local time, a Chinese student returned to Australia after staying in Dubai was diagnosed. Subsequently, citizens returning to Australia from Italy, South Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries were confirmed. The study circle began to discuss: is Australia still safe?

On the night of March 8 local time, I put on two layers of masks and a pair of gloves and set off for suvannapu International Airport in Bangkok. With all the materials, I got my boarding pass to Melbourne smoothly. At noon on March 9 local time, the flight arrived at Melbourne Airport, and the customs staff only asked me about the date when I left mainland China and then gave me clearance. In the entry hall, I didnt see any anti epidemic measures. I used to think that I could get a sigh of relief out of the airport when I realized that it was just the beginning.

On the morning of March 10 local time, I felt that I had some fever symptoms, so I entrusted my friend to buy a thermometer and told him not to send it upstairs, just put it in the reception of the apartment. After the test, the temperature was normal. Fortunately, it was a false alarm. But this war shocked the apartment manager. After communicating with the manager, I decided to stay at home for a while. On that day, the total number of confirmed cases in Australia was over 100. At that time, a student in Phuket, Thailand, turned to book a ticket back home.
