Recently, Zhang Ming, associate professor of reproductive medicine center of Central South Hospital of Wuhan University, and others uploaded a paper on medrxiv platform, entitled effect of sars-cov-2 infection on male gonad function: asinglecenter based study.
Medrxiv is a free, non-profit service platform jointly operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, BMJ and Yale University. It is used to publish complete but unpublished research manuscripts, that is, the articles will not be peer reviewed before they are published online.
Media reports showed that novel coronavirus pneumonia samples were collected from 81 male patients in Zhang Mings team at the reproductive medicine center of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University. The patients, aged from 20 to 54, were admitted to Wuhan leishenshan hospital on March 5 and March 18.
Zhang Mings team compared 81 new crown patients with 100 healthy men of the same age and found that the serum LH and prolactin levels of the former increased significantly, while the ratio of testosterone and FSH to LH decreased significantly.
LH is a glycoprotein gonadotropin secreted by adenohypophysis cells, which can promote the conversion of cholesterol into sex hormones. The author believes that although semen parameters are the direct reflection of gonadal function, the changes of the above indicators also provide the first indirect clinical evidence for the new coronavirus to attack testicular function.
For the above research, the Propaganda Department of Central South Hospital of Wuhan University responded to the reporter of Beijing News, saying that the research project of Associate Professor Zhang Ming does exist, relevant papers have not been published, and is still in the research stage. The impact of new coronavirus on male reproductive function is only a research direction, and the research results have not been formed. At present, the research has some data support, but there is not a large number of data support.
The research team of reproductive medicine center of Central South Hospital of Wuhan University found that the serum LH and prolactin levels of male new crown patients of childbearing age increased significantly, while the ratio of testosterone and FSH to LH decreased significantly, so it was speculated that the infection of new crown might inhibit the function of cell related to reproduction, thus resulting in spermatogenesis failure.
