Wimbledon statement: will not cancel or postpone next weeks decision

Wimbledon started in 1877, and this years tournament was originally scheduled for June 29 to July 12. But with the novel coronavirus pneumonia spreading in Europe, the prospects of the tournament are becoming less optimistic. In the statement of Wimbledon organizing committee, it has been made clear that the competition will not be held without audience. The Wimbledon organizing committee said it is currently actively communicating with the British government, ATP, WTA and other Grand Slam events to determine the best plan.

Different from the other three Grand Slams, the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open, Wimbledon is on the grass and the preparations are quite special. The Wimbledon organizing committee said that preparations for the event must begin at the end of April, otherwise it would be too late.

However, according to the existing schedule of tennis, the US Open will be held from August 31 to September 13. In this way, Wimbledon can only move the schedule forward, and can not be too close to the schedule of the US Open. Fortunately, after the Tokyo Olympic Games were postponed, a little time was set aside for Wimbledon, but the schedule would be quite tense. At present, even if Wimbledon is delayed, it cant be later than the middle of August.

Before this, another grand slam match French Open has unilaterally decided to postpone the match to September 20 to October 4. If Wimbledon postpones the match to August, it will put forward high demands on the players. They need to take part in three Grand Slams successively: grass, hard ground and clay within two months.
