If he is lucky, he will finish the cleaning of 18 wards on the 5th floor of the hospital in an hour and a half. The biggest problem is that Ma Hongquan often meets with vomiting or diarrhea of patients. Sometimes when he doesnt have time to go to the bathroom, the patients will spit directly on the ground.
Because the vomitus of the patient is very dangerous, Ma Hongquan must quickly cover it with a sterilized square towel, two or three if one is not completely covered Then spray disinfectant on the square towel, wait for ten minutes, put on a layer of gloves, clean and seal the vomit, and put it in the designated position.
Ma Hong Quan
Ma Hongquan, 27, is a volunteer temporarily recruited by the Logistics Department of Guanggu District of Wuhan Tongji Hospital. He needs to be responsible for ward disinfection and medical waste cleaning. Like Ma Hongquan, since novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreaks, with the increase of isolation points, medical waste has increased rapidly, and a large number of workers are being disposed of in a line every day. Most of them are engaged in the most dangerous work besides medical staff.
From recycling, transportation to incineration, the journey of a package of new coronavirus related medical waste seems simple but full of great risks. As of 24:00 on February 29, there were 66907 confirmed cases in Wuhan. Behind these 60000 patients, there are countless infectious medical wastes and all kinds of polluted domestic wastes.
Recently, the Red Star News reporter went to many hospitals in Wuhan, followed the medical waste transfer vehicle, walked into the waste disposal point, and visited the small bodies behind the huge medical waste.
Cleaning and recycling: most afraid to enter the ICU, it will be hard to stay for a long time
I have done security work at the isolation point and worked as a laborer in Leishen mountain Ma Hongquan, who is engaged in sales work, has been volunteering here since he failed to return to his hometown Xiangyang for the new year in Fengcheng, Wuhan.
Novel coronavirus pneumonia was reported in February 9th in Ma Hongquan group. In the Optics Valley hospital area of Tongji Hospital, the hospital was completed. 17 beds were treated in 830 beds in the 830 wards.
Cleaning up the hospital ward means zero distance contact with the virus. Ma Hong struggled all night, and the next day he called to sign up. Soon, he and two volunteers younger than him lived in the dormitory prepared by the hospital. The three persons are respectively responsible for the disinfection and cleaning of the fourth, fifth and sixth floor wards of the hospital.
The new coronavirus is mainly transmitted through droplets and contact, and aerosols are also a big risk in the limited space of hospitals. Before going to work, mahongquan three people trained for one day, and the staff also prepared a chart of work flow of new crown ward for each of them.
At 7:00 every day, enter the cleaning area of the ward to change clothes and wear protective clothing; at 7:15, clean the buffer area, mop the ground and collect the garbage in the buffer area to the contaminated area; at 7:30, pack and tie the garbage in the contaminated area and send it to the waste elevator hall; at 7:30-9:00, clean the ward for sanitation and disinfection; at 9:00-11:30, clean the medical waste temporary storage room in the contaminated area; at 11:30, take off protective clothing and return to the cleaning area and leave the disease after changing clothes District. In the afternoon, the three of them will repeat the above process again.
In addition to the ward cleaning process, there are many details to be noted. Ma Hongquan said that to protect and disinfect the whole body in the clean area, you need to wear two layers of headgear, two layers of gloves and shoes, and a protective screen. You need to use alcohol to disinfect between each step. Then, enter three buffer rooms in turn as required, then semi polluted area and finally polluted area.
Ma Hongquan is responsible for 54 patients in 18 wards. He enters the polluted area every day. First, he is equipped with 84 disinfectant water and soaked more than 20 mop heads and more than 50 disinfectant small square towels for half an hour. In order to prevent cross infection, each ward has a special mop head, and each bed is equipped with a sterilized square towel, which cannot be mixed. Later, Ma Hongquan will enter the ward to collect garbage, clean and disinfect the ground, toilet, locker, bed, etc.
Symptoms of novel coronavirus pneumonia include vomiting and diarrhea. Therefore, patients often vomit or excrete to the ground before they go to the bathroom. At this time, Ma Hongquan must quickly cover them with a sterilized square towel. One cannot cover two or three Then spray disinfectant on the square towel, wait for ten minutes, put on a layer of gloves, clean up the vomit, seal the package, and put it in the designated position.
According to Ma Hongquan and his colleagues, the work in light ward is easier than that in severe ward, but not only the work content, but also the psychological pressure.
The patients in the ICU cant move because the tubes are inserted and there are various instruments around them. They need to clean and leave quickly after entering each time. Its hard to stay long. Ma Hongquan said that one time his colleague was in charge of the hospital bed, the person was OK in the morning and died in the afternoon, and then the bed was pushed away, clothes and supplies were thrown away as medical waste, and even ID cards, bank cards and mobile phones were only allowed to be photographed by family members, not allowed to be taken away.
Different from the usual medical wastes, all the wastes generated in the new crown disease area are medical wastes, such as protective clothing of medical staff, patients clothes, bedding, towels, boxed meals in the disease area, vomitus of patients, etc. The disposal of these wastes must be strictly classified.
Medical fabrics are packed in soluble medical waste garbage bags, sealed with new crown ties and transferred to the washing Center for washing; medical wastes are packed in yellow medical waste bags, sealed with new crown ties and transferred to the medical waste room for transfer and burning. It is understood that there are three kinds of new crown medical ties: yellow (infectious waste), white (infectious waste) and rose red (injurious waste), each of which has its own two-dimensional code and number.
New crown medical strapping.
The sealed and wrapped medical waste from the ward to the medical waste room needs special staff to pass through the waste elevator. The medical waste room in Guanggu District of Tongji Hospital is on the first floor of the basement. Recently, due to the increase of waste, the original waste room is full, and many garbage cans have to be placed outside the waste room.
Transfer and transport: wipe your body with alcohol
On February 27, a transport vehicle capable of carrying 18 barrels of medical waste passed through the pollutant transport entrance and exit to the medical waste room of Guanggu hospital area of Tongji Hospital.

Medron is the person in charge of this vehicle. He has five vehicles in his hand, mainly responsible for the transportation of medical wastes in the major hospitals, community hospitals and isolation points of Wuhan East Lake New Technology Industrial Development Zone.
Meidelong is an employee of Hubei CNPC Youyi Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as CNPC environmental protection). On January 29, the first batch of 5 medical waste vehicles and 12 professional medical waste disposal staff of the company went from Xiangyang to Wuhan for support. With the continuous growth of medical waste, the company sent three more reinforcements, including Medron.
At present, they have 93 staff and 35 Vehicles shuttling through major hospitals in Wuhan to transport one vehicle of medical waste to waste disposal points.
At 8 a.m. every day, the District Environmental Protection Bureau will notify Medron according to the situation of the hospital and waste disposal point, and he will arrange vehicles to specific hospitals according to the notice. The transportation is completed in the morning, and the staff go to the assigned hotel to receive the boxed meal, and then leave in the afternoon. At most, they run four times a day. Now with the increase of support, they run two times most of the time.
At 1:30 p.m. on February 28, Red Star News reporter followed the transport vehicle to arrive at the temporary storage room of medical waste in Guanggu District of Hubei traditional Chinese medicine hospital - the plank house on the side of the inpatient building.
The driver, the escort and the staff of the hospital first unload the empty bucket, and then carry the bucket full of garbage into the car. After moving, it is a collective disinfection. The staff spray each other with an alcohol spray bottle, gloves, protective clothing, sole of shoes, and then disinfect the inside and outside of the carriage.
Disinfect drivers and escorts.
The hospital is more than 20 kilometers away from the waste disposal point, which belongs to Wuhan North Lake Yunfeng Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Yunfeng environmental protection), and is a disposal point frequently visited by the team of Medron. According to media reports, at the beginning of the epidemic, Yunfeng environmental protection was ordered to suspend the incineration of industrial waste and deal with medical waste in an emergency. From the first barrel of medical waste entering the plant to February 18, 26 days later, nearly 200 tons of medical waste were disposed in Wuhan.
Driving for half an hour, at 2:10 p.m., the transport vehicle stopped at the gate of Yunfeng environmental protection factory. There are four or five cars in front of us. The staff came to register the license plate number. The time to enter the factory is about 3:10. During the waiting time, the driver poured the car into the open space beside us. The registration time is up, but there is still no way to get in. Several drivers went to ask the staff, and got the reply that the handling capacity is limited, so they can only continue to wait.
The driver was worried. He called Medron and handed it to the staff of the disposal plant. After some communication, the driver could only return to the car.
The driver waited for medical waste to be disposed of.
Medron told Red Star news that the biggest problem in the transportation of garbage now is queuing. Every disposal point will queue up for one hour or two or three hours. The driver called me as soon as he was in a hurry. I could only call the Environmental Protection Bureau or the disposal point to ask about the situation. Many times I couldnt help it, I had to let the disposal point arrange some boxed meals to make up for the time when they went back to the hotel for dinner.
When its hot and the protective clothing is airtight, he said, his clothes will be wet every time he goes out, and his whole body will be chilly when he stands still. But because of the danger of work, no one dares to neglect the protection work. Some of my colleagues families are worried and remind them to disinfect all the time. They want to wipe their bodies with alcohol. Said Medron.
Medical waste disposal point.
Near 4 p.m., the transporter finally entered the factory. After unloading the car in the roar of the machine, the staff pushed the disinfection car, disinfected all the garbage cans first, and then disinfected the exterior and interior of the car body. Every two or three minutes, they will dump two buckets of garbage into the bucket car, which will rise to the boiler along with the conveyor belt to complete the last procedure. After 18 empty barrels are collected, the transport vehicle can leave.
Disinfection and incineration: more than 1 hour at a time, 24 hours non-stop work
High temperature cooking, microwave disinfection and incineration are three ways of medical waste treatment. However, during the outbreak, the number of medical waste suddenly increased, and incineration is more commonly used.
Mr. Li, the boss of an environmental protection enterprise in Shenzhen, has been a volunteer in Leishen mountain since the fifth day of the lunar new year. In an interview with the peoples daily, he said that the waste cracking incinerators in the hospital area burn about two thousand packages of medical waste a day, totaling about 8 to 10 tons.
According to reports, it is very difficult to burn this kind of medical waste, because most of them are protective clothing, which is difficult to fold and compress after use, so the volume is large, so it is difficult to stuff the waste into the furnace.
In addition, tar will be produced when burning protective clothing, and the furnace temperature must reach 89 Baidu to ensure that the protective clothing is completely burned, so the time for each round of waste incineration will be very long, and it will take more than one hour for one combustion treatment. In order to ensure that the medical waste of Leishen mountain can be treated quickly without accumulation, the cracking incinerator is now in a 24 hour working state, and volunteers also take turns to work in the morning and evening shift.
Staff of medical waste disposal point
In addition to transferring them to disposal points, many hospitals have to deal with some of them by themselves.
Outside the Dahuashan shelter hospital in Jiangxia District, there is a temporary disposal point dedicated to burning medical waste. The warning line is pulled around the disposal site, and the fence at the intersection is pasted with: high-risk garbage, no admittance. From time to time, two staff threw a bag of garbage into the furnace, and the black smoke caused by the burning could be seen from a long distance.
In the open space beside the parking lot of Guanggu District of Tongji Hospital, a waste disposal point has also been built temporarily. The blue plastic awning is surrounded by red, white and blue plastic. A streilwave medical waste treatment equipment is operated by volunteers for 24 hours.
According to the volunteers in charge of the equipment, streilwave grinds the medical waste into powder waste with a pulverizer and mixer, and disinfects the waste with microwave at high temperature. It takes about 20 minutes for each bucket to be disposed.
Because of the limited storage in the previous medical waste room, the hospital recently added several containers near the equipment to transport part of the medical waste to the container first, and then they used the garbage cans to the container to transport the waste to the equipment for treatment. At ordinary times, they live in a container without garbage, and work 24 hours a day.
According to media reports, the medical waste of Tongji Zhongfa new town hospital was originally placed in the temporary storage room in the basement of the hospital and sterilized with infrared rays and liquid medicine. However, with the arrival of the epidemic, the medical waste generated was ten times as much as before.
In the past, we used to cover our medical waste when we put it in the garbage can, but now there are too many medical waste. Not only cant the cover be closed, but also we have to stuff the garbage into the garbage can. Sometimes the garbage bag containing medical waste will burst when it is squeezed. One staff member said.
It is worth mentioning that the transportation scope of CNPC environmental protection involves almost all hospitals in Wuhan, even part of the medical waste transportation work of huoshenshan hospital. So far, the company has transferred 910 medical waste vehicles, more than 500 tons.
According to the relevant person in charge, most hospitals and disposal points do not have the ability to weigh. The weight of medical waste can only be estimated according to the number of medical waste barrels. The weight of each barrel is about 50 to 100 Jin, but sometimes only one quilt is installed in a barrel, which is not heavy but takes up a lot of space.
According to media reports, on February 16, the construction of the new medical waste disposal project of Yunfeng environmental protection covering an area of 2000 square meters began. After the completion of the project, the daily average treatment of medical waste will be 22 tons. As of February 24, the disposal capacity of medical waste in Wuhan is 262.8 tons per day.
Medron now runs almost all hospitals in Wuhan. He finds that many hospitals have not only insufficient garbage cans, but also limited storage capacity. Some hospitals have to find another open place to temporarily store medical waste.
