Xinhua News Agency: Although there are still thorns ahead of the signing of the US Tajikistan agreement

The U.S. government and representatives of the Afghan Taliban signed a peace agreement in Doha, the capital of Qatar, Tuesday. Under the agreement, the United States will begin to gradually reduce its presence in Afghanistan, while the Taliban promised not to let Afghanistan become a sanctuary for terrorists.

The interference of external forces is the root cause of the chaos in Afghanistan. Therefore, the international community is happy to see a peace agreement signed between the United States and the Taliban. But at the same time, we should be aware that this agreement is only the starting point for Afghanistan to move towards peace, and there are still thorns ahead.

This first step is not easy. As early as 2018, the two sides started negotiations in Doha. After repeated negotiations, they were close to reaching an agreement. In September 2019, U.S. President trump called a halt to negotiations on the grounds that the Taliban attack killed the U.S. military. Negotiations resumed in December last year. The Taliban announced to the media in mid January that the agreement would be signed by the end of January, but it was not until this month that the two sides jointly implemented a seven-day agreement on reducing violence that paved the way for a final peace agreement.

Although the peace agreement has been signed, there are still many uncertainties about the prospects for peace in Afghanistan.

First of all, the question remains whether the two sides can faithfully implement the agreement. In addition, in the case of fragile mutual trust between the United States and Tajikistan, no matter what the reasons are, once the two sides brush off their guns and fire, the peace agreement may still encounter problems.

Secondly, it is noted that the Afghan government is not involved in the US Tajikistan negotiations. In this important political process, which concerns the future and destiny of a country, the legitimate government is absent. In the past, the Taliban called the Afghan government a puppet of the United States and refused to talk to the government. After the signing of the peace agreement with the United States, whether the Taliban keep its promise and start negotiations with the Afghan government will largely determine the future trend of the situation.

In fact, even if the Afghan government and the Taliban sit at the negotiating table, the road to lasting peace is still very long. There are huge differences between the Taliban and the government in terms of governing ideas and practices. There is very limited room for both sides to give way to the structure of power sharing in the future.

Moreover, Al Qaeda and the Islamic state do not want peace in Afghanistan. They will not stop making waves and instigating incitement, and their destructive power cannot be ignored.

It should be noted, however, that the achievement of peace in Afghanistan is generally supported by the international community. The war in Afghanistan launched in 2001, the longest in the United States, has killed tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and more than 2400 U.S. troops. The people of both countries are tired of the war. The peoples collective psychological expectations must be seriously considered by those in power.

It is in this context that meita finally reached an agreement. All parties involved in the situation in Afghanistan should cherish this hard won opportunity for peace and forge a sword for Afghanistans stability and prosperity.
