Zheng zaosong, 29, was arrested when he was about to fly from Boston to Beijing on flight 482 of Hainan Airlines, and was stopped by local customs.

Customs and border protection warned that he was a high-risk person with undeclared biomaterials and checked his luggage at the airlines luggage office. Then, the customs found 21 bottles of brown liquid in his checked baggage, which were examined as cancer cell samples.

According to court documents, Zheng allegedly took samples of the cancer cells from the laboratory of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where he works.

According to Jason A. Newton, a spokesman for Harvard University, the school began to provide visas for Zheng zaosong on September 4, 2018. In a statement, the hospital center where the man worked said Zheng had been fired and they were cooperating in the investigation.

At the time of interrogation, Zheng refused to admit that the bottles contained cancer cell samples and told customs officials that these vials are not important and have nothing to do with the research.. Later, he said the bottle was given by a friend.

After careful interrogation, he admitted stealing eight of the samples and copying 11 others based on his colleagues research.

Zheng said he would send the samples to a hospital and publish the results in China in his own name to promote his career, the report quoted the document as saying.

At a 30 day hearing, district judge Heng approved the prosecutions request for non bail. U.S. federal prosecutors say Zheng may face a felony of transporting stolen goods or stealing trade secrets, with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
