Quick reading of 60s key points:

1. For China, the comparative advantage of traditional human capital results is weakening. How to regain the advantage of human capital is one of the key components of future economic development.

2. There is a very important exam in China, called college entrance examination. Many people may think that this kind of education mode of one test for life is not very scientific, but in my opinion, it is the most equitable shortcut for many students, especially those from poor families and ordinary families, to be able to excel quickly.

3. China is a big country in education, but now it should transform itself into a powerful country in education, and develop inclusive and high-quality education.

There are two kinds of talents. We must distinguish them well. One is the talent that can stand out in any education system. The other is the ordinary talents who need good education system to nourish and cultivate. Talents are not always able to succeed automatically. They also need to be nurtured and guided.

5. The real purpose of education should be to acquire the method of learning so as to be able to learn for life. So, no matter now or in the future, no matter our generation or our next generation, we should try our best to get a better education and match our talents.

The text is as follows:

For more than a thousand years before the industrial revolution, China was always the best in the world. After the industrial revolution, the balance of world development began to tilt towards the western world. But I am still conquered by China, or rather by the Chinese people. Chinese people are very enthusiastic, compassionate and willing to learn and improve themselves.

Chinas economic rise and rapid development in the past 40 years is a miracle and one of the few achievements in human history. In less than two generations, from the role of external closed successfully integrated into all corners of modern life, changed the global production chain and investment chain. China not only enables the world to enjoy a wider range of products and services at a lower price, but also creates a large number of jobs and wealth for China. However, it cannot be denied that the challenges facing Chinas economic model are also increasing. This kind of development based on high cost, high pollution and low welfare is unsustainable, and all these problems need to be solved. China needs to be more transparent in its policies, and implement the construction of the legal system and the reform of property rights as soon as possible. The challenges facing the development of every country are enormous. For China, the first challenge is to change the thinking of the next generation of Chinese.

More important than education is a persons ability

There is a wise saying in China that education is the foundation for a hundred years, which I quite agree with. Education is related to thousands of families and the national economy and peoples livelihood. Education plays not only the role of inheriting culture and knowledge, but also the role of establishing and reshaping values. From the micro point of view, education plays an important role in everyones growth. From a macro perspective, education is the foundation of a country. Whether a country has development potential in the future depends on its current level of education development, while whether a person has development potential in the future largely depends on his education level. It is worth noting that the education level I mentioned includes not only his educational background, but also his knowledge composition.

A high degree can only prove that he is a good student. He is very good at learning. But in this world, learning ability is only one of our many abilities. It is not enough to have only excellent learning ability. If a persons profession and work do not match with his knowledge composition, it is also a manifestation of insufficient education. This is a very common phenomenon. Maybe you think that the work you are engaged in matches the knowledge you learn in school, but with the deepening of your work, you will find a lot of mismatches, which requires you to keep learning, so that you can make your knowledge match your work. Even if you are an excellent and capable employee, as you become a team leader, director and other management, you should not only learn business knowledge, but also learn how to manage subordinates, how to lead teams, and so on. Although these management knowledge, or knowledge in other fields, are not required by your initial business ability, they are also part of your job responsibilities. You also need to study hard to match the job.

In addition, under the influence of science and technology, our society and everything we have experienced are developing rapidly. For China, the comparative advantage of traditional human capital results is weakening. How to regain the advantage of human capital is one of the key components of future economic development. For most people, many technological revolutions and innovations are just popular words, but if these technological means intersect with your work, we need to keep learning, enhance our education level and enrich our knowledge composition, so as not to be left behind by the times.

One survey has shown an interesting conclusion. Thanks to the contributions of China and India, the income inequality of 145 countries in the world decreased significantly between 1988 and 2015. If the sample data of China and India are excluded, the inequality in 2015 will be higher than that in 1988. I think this is inseparable from Chinas significant progress in the field of education.

China is a country with a large population. Before 1949, 80% of the population was illiterate. With the popularization of compulsory education in China, the illiteracy rate has been greatly reduced. Now it is about 5%. China is a big country of education, but now it should transform itself into a powerful country of education, and develop inclusive and high-quality education. There is a very important test in China, called college entrance examination. Many people may think that this kind of education mode of one test for life is not very scientific, but in my opinion, it is the most equitable shortcut for many students, especially those from poor families and ordinary families, to be able to excel quickly. There are more than 8 million university graduates in China this year. How to create suitable employment opportunities for them is a big challenge. We see that in this years government work report, for the first time, the Chinese government has upgraded its employment policy to the position of macroeconomic policy. Correspondingly, the gap between the final salary and the expected value of many graduates is large, which deserves our deep consideration.

Talents need nourishment and guidance

There are two kinds of talents. We must distinguish them well. One is the talent that can stand out in any education system. The other is the ordinary talents who need good education system to nourish and cultivate. In this world, no matter what kind of environment genius is in, it is always popular and brilliant, but countless ordinary talents are unknown because of the ineffective education system. Talents are not always able to succeed automatically. They also need to be nurtured and guided. There are many successful entrepreneurs in China. They have money, villas and so on, but they lack ideal education. Chinas education system does support a certain number of talents, which has been proved by Chinas frequent ranking in the International Student Assessment Program (PISA). But, as I said before, what matters in life is far more than the right answers and the standard knowledge in textbooks. China now needs well-educated and innovative talents, and the world is totally different from the world their teachers grew up in. Give every child as much support and nourishment as possible, which will pave the way for an open and curious mind and lay a good foundation for the flexibility needed in the face of a rapidly changing work environment in the future.

We have six children and 14 grandchildren. So, I think you can imagine how important education is to us. Considering education, I think we must seriously think about two things: first, what do we teach our children? Second, how do we teach? Most of our educational accumulation is largely based on past experience. Experience is like a lantern behind you. It will light up the road ahead for the people behind you. What we also need to do in education is to let the light in front of us lead us.

We must look forward to the fact that education in the 21st century has different requirements from that in the 20th century. Today, we can neither predict what will happen in the future, nor predict in what kind of environment the knowledge we need will be applied. In that case, what is the most important thing? The content of knowledge itself is still the basis of education. But we must have other basic skills, such as social skills, which are just as important as knowledge content.

Knowledge content is still important in all areas, but equally important, if not a key competitive advantage, is to develop our intellectual curiosity, our social skills, and how we deal with conflict, communication and language skills. It is these skills that will form the basis of competitive advantage in the 21st century.

So how do we teach these skills?

Scientists have done an experiment, and then they found that the difference between ordinary people and genius is only 0.1% to 0.4%. Each of us is born with a tiny gap, so what makes the difference in the end?

In my opinion, the real difference is how much support we get and how comprehensive development we can get, which must start very early. The importance of early years education for a child is often much greater than we generally think. Because each of us, by the age of three, has learned more than we have learned for the rest of our lives. We must be curious as soon as we are born. We must focus on our strengths, not on our weaknesses, which may not be important in our future life.

Needless to say, I think Gillian Lynnes growth story is a good example. When Gillian Lynn was a little girl, she was a typical poor student with poor grades, poor performance and constant troubles at school. Even her teacher couldnt see it anymore. She found her parents and said, you cant go on like this. She may be more suitable for some schools built for children with learning disabilities. It worried her mother so much that she and Gillian went to see the doctor. The doctor spoke to Gillian and said to her mother, lets get out of the room. Then the doctor turned on the radio. As soon as they got outside, Gillian Lynn began to dance. The doctor told Gillians mother, your child is fine. She is a genius in dancing and sports. Now, what about Gillian Lynn? Gillian, 20, became the chief dancer of the Royal wells ballet, the later famous Royal Ballet. Later, she became a very famous ballerina and choreographer at the National Opera House in London. She worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber to choreograph the phantom of the opera, the flying omnibus and many other musicals, such as the familiar cat, and her career was very successful. What shaped her success? That is to make her specialty the focus of her family education. So we should encourage teachers and parents to pay attention to their childrens talents, help them find out what they really want to do, and support them to do it.

In my own life, I dropped out of high school in the first year, and became an apprentice in a printing shop. At that time, the main work was very boring, that is, adding paper to the printer mechanically. Then I went to do the work of digging and burying the earth pit of electric pole, which was also boring but paid better than before. At the age of 17, I joined the U.S. Marine Corps and began to study during my two years in the service. After I retired, Utah accepted me as a temporary student because I didnt have a high school diploma. I ran for president of the student union at the University of Utah, graduated with an all-in-one and started my own business. Now looking back, I dont seem ready to accept what high school can teach me, but in the end, I am ready to go to college directly. Everyones learning stage and learning style are different. Now I understand that the real purpose of education should be to acquire the method of learning so as to be able to learn for life. So, no matter now or in the future, no matter our generation or our next generation, we should try our best to get a better education and match our talents.
