White residue found on the inner wall, confirming the fountain function

By using portable X-ray spectrometer, X-ray photography, plastic material flip-flop micrograph and camera macro photography observation, the bronze statue of horse head was analyzed and detected in the school of archaeology, culture and Museum, Peking University. The researchers hope to learn about the material, casting process and possible use of horse head.

The results of component analysis show that the material used in horse head is red copper containing trace lead and zinc. The content of copper is about 98%, including about 1% lead, and a certain amount of iron and zinc. The melting point of red copper is 1083 u2103, and the casting needs to be carried out at a higher temperature. The reason for using red copper should be to present the effect of purplish red.

The researchers enlarged and observed the details of the inner wall of the bronze statue, and found that there were many white residues on the inner wall, which may be precipitates such as scale, which indicates that the inner wall of the bronze statue of horse head may contact with water for a long time. There is a layer of scale deposited on the inner surface, which may be closely related to its function as a fountain.

One time casting by lost wax method in precision casting

The preliminary process analysis confirmed that the whole capital of Ma was made by one-time casting with the method of lost wax in precision casting, which can be called the excellent product of lost wax casting, and the process is very exquisite.

The casting process of horse head was reduced after X-ray examination. In addition to a number of curium nails visible in the front and lower part of the neck, there are no obvious separate casting and welding traces in all other parts of the horse head. It can be seen that the horse head is made by Hun casting. The neck and face, as well as the eyes, ears, mouth and tongue should be cast in one, which is very vivid and lifelike. The curves of the horse face and chin are displayed smoothly. According to this judgment, the whole horse head is made by one-time casting with the method of precision casting - the lost wax method, which can be called the excellent product of lost wax casting.

At the same time, the top mane is casted layer by layer, connected with horse head through wax stem, and casted as a whole. The overall craft level is quite high, which shows that the level of the artifact is very high, which can not be achieved without Royal demand.

According to the researchers, these preliminary inferences, the production process of the animal head of the twelve zodiac animals in the Yuanmingyuan is worthy of in-depth study and exploration, providing valuable material for the restoration of the traditional lost wax casting process in China. Link: in 1860, the British and French allied forces invaded Beijing, and the Old Summer Palace was looted and burned. The bronze statues of horse heads in the Old Summer Palace and 11 other bronze statues of beast heads were lost overseas. Patriot Stanley Ho bought bronze statues of horse heads in 2007, bringing them back to China. On November 13 this year, Mr. ho formally donated the bronze statue of horse head to the State Administration of cultural relics, which has transferred the bronze statue of horse head to Beijing Yuanmingyuan Management Office for collection, which is the first animal head to return to the Yuanmingyuan.
