What new connotation does the viewpoint of filial piety first and raising children and preventing the aged present?

Is raising children only for the purpose of prevention of old age or for the purpose of enjoying the process of raising children?

What are the differences between rural and urban areas?

In order to find out the answers to these questions, this paper specially entrusts Beijing University China Social Science Investigation Center China family tracking investigation project office to contribute, using the data of China family tracking investigation (hereinafter referred to as CFPS) to interpret the interesting phenomenon of the current situation of marriage and family in Chinas contemporary society.

The change of gender concept

According to the survey, people born in different ages have different opinions on the idea of male dominated, female dominated. The older generation has nearly 80% approval of this view, and there is basically no difference between men and women. Among the young people, the degree of males approval of this view has declined slowly, and the proportion of post-90s womens approval has dropped to less than 40%.

However, both men and women have a high degree of recognition of men should undertake half of the housework, and there is no significant difference between the Post-70s and the older generation. However, the men of the post-80s and post-90s have decreased their recognition of this view, which is 10 percentage points lower than that of women of the same era.

In addition, for better work than marriage, compared with the older generation, the new generation, whether male or female, has been reducing the recognition of this view, post-90s only 30% of the recognition, and the differences between men and women are also disappearing.

In the traditional Chinese society, children have always been an important inheritance of family relations, so whether there are children is always regarded as a sign of womens integrity. The survey found that womens approval of this view is always higher than mens. The Post-70s and post-80s have a slight decline in the recognition of this concept, while most of the post-90s who did not enter the marital status at the time of investigation have the lowest recognition.

How children treat their parents

With the development of social economy and modernization and the spread of new values and cultural concepts, the situation of marriage and childbearing family in Chinese society has also changed dramatically. What new connotation does the viewpoint of filial piety first and raising children and preventing the aged present?

CFPS investigated the following opinions to understand the filial piety in childrens mind and the difference between urban and rural residents.

In ancient times, there was a saying that parents are here and dont travel far. Nowadays, although many children cant stay with their parents all the time, they generally agree with the views of children are kind to their parents and go home to visit their parents. The proportion is as high as 90%, and the recognition of other views is more than half.

Among them, urban and rural residents agree about 90% on the views of treating parents well and visiting parents at home. But in the attitude of other views, the rural residents identity is higher than the urban residents. In the view of sons live with their parents and having at least one son, the rural residents identity is 20% higher than that of the urban residents.

How parents treat their children

With the changes of the times and the continuous development and progress of the society, peoples concept of having children is constantly changing. Is raising children only for the purpose of prevention of old age or for the purpose of enjoying the process of raising children? What are the differences between rural and urban areas?

According to the data, people have a high degree of identification with non-material factors such as the happiness of children around, the joy of watching children grow up and to make the family more important, all of which are more than 80%. The proportion of identification of material factors such as help when old, continue family fragrance and help family economically is relatively low, among which the degree of identification of children help family economically is less than 50%.

No matter in urban or rural areas, the proportion of recognition of having children is a process of enjoyment is close to 95%, but in rural areas, the recognition of raising children to prevent the aged is close to 85%, and in urban areas, it is less than 70%. It can be seen that the family concept of raising children and preventing the aged still plays an important role in rural residents.

Parents recognition of divorce

As for the topic of divorce, families in traditional Chinese society often keep it a secret. The survey found that the vast majority of families agree with the view that divorce is harmful to children, accounting for nearly 85%. At the same time, more than 60% of parents said that divorce should not be done for childrens happiness.

From the comparison of urban and rural parents answers to the two questions about divorce, it is found that urban parents recognition of divorce is harmful to children is higher than that of rural parents; however, for happiness for children should not be divorced, rural parents recognition is higher than that of urban parents.
