Indian shipyard and Navy sign the third stage construction contract of domestic aircraft carrier

The Cochin shipyard signed a phase III construction contract for the Chinese made aircraft carrier vitrana on October 31, the company said in a statement

According to the report, the contract covers the in port acceptance test and sea test of various equipment and systems on the domestic aircraft carrier vikrand, as well as a series of work such as providing support services for shipborne weapons and aviation test after delivery.

Aircraft carrier vikrand made in India

The vikrand is the first self built aircraft carrier in India, with a full load displacement of more than 40000 tons. The carrier was launched on August 12, 2013, but it was only 30% completed at that time. It was not installed and constructed when launching, which seemed like only one bottom was built. In the later construction, the progress was very slow. In order to give way to other ships to be built, the carrier also went into and out of the dock many times.

Cost overruns have become a major problem for the vikrand. In 2015, the Defense Committee of the Indian Parliament revealed that the cost of the vikrand aircraft carrier would exceed $2.81 billion, a six fold increase from the original budget. On July 19, 2018, the information bureau of the government of India issued a statement that the Indian Navy will carry out navigation tests on the first domestic aircraft carrier vikrand in 2020. However, according to the current construction progress, it is difficult to carry out the sea trial as scheduled.
