Shen NANPENG salutes the worlds strongest brain group at the opening of the world top scientists Forum

Here is Shen NANPENGs speech:

Dear scientists,

Good morning, everyone! Im Shen NANPENG of Sequoia Capital. As a global strategic partner of the forum, welcome to China and Shanghai.

Im sorry that I didnt get this lucky. However, those esoteric formulas and theories still leave a deep imprint on our generation, and even affect our career that seems less relevant to scientific research later.

Like many peers who have been looking forward to achievements in the scientific world, I applaud your achievements and envy your career, because I know you are all working happily. It can be expected that exploring the unknown requires more hard work, but the process itself will bring great pleasure - because science is interesting!

For the past 20 years, I have been doing things related to entrepreneurship. A few years ago, at a global alumni gathering at my alma mater, Shanghai Jiaotong University, I met Professor Ye Jun, my roommate. He is now a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a famous scientist in the field of astrophysics. When I finished the topic innovation and entrepreneurship on the stage, he and I said, we have a lot of incommon. Indeed, we found that scientists and entrepreneurs have surprisingly similar temperament characteristics. John Dewey, a famous American philosopher, said: every great achievement of science is based on a bold fantasy. In the words of entrepreneurs, it is dreambig.

Today, a remarkable feature of science is that the research results achieved by scientists can have a more direct and rapid impact on industry and produce social benefits than at any time in history. In other words, the transformation from science to technology has become more effective, and the transformation from technology to product has more power to be realized in a more professional way. In the past two or three decades, a huge new productivity has sprung up - from immunotherapy, laser technology to gene diagnosis and treatment, new energy batteries, of course, many of them are still in the early stage of development, among which the most important life science and information technology are the protagonists of the fourth industrial revolution. Behind all these innovations and even revolutions, scientists are the heroes behind the scenes and the ultimate source of wisdom. Of course, there are still many problems to be solved in this world. I believe that you and a large number of young scientists following you will continue to surprise us.

Finally, I would like to share two stories with you. One day in February 2016, we received a thank you email from LP (limited partner). According to the email, they are long-term funders of the LIGO (laser interference gravitational wave observatory) project. Over the years, Sequoia has brought them huge returns, making this long research project always obtain reliable financial support, which plays an important role in the final discovery of gravitational wave and the confirmation of Einsteins prediction 100 years ago. It can be said that this is the most proud email for Sequoia.

Another story is that two weeks ago, this years Nobel Prize in economics was announced, and the winners, abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, were honored for their experimental approach to reducing global poverty. Our LP, Hewlett Packard Foundation founded by HP co-founder, is a long-term funder of this project. Sequoias first payment to this public welfare foundation can be traced back to 2008. For our global team, these are all memorable moments that can contribute to these great causes and make us feel happy and fulfilled in the seemingly boring work every day. Finally, I look forward to hearing your wonderful speech at the Mobius forum of the worlds top scientists tomorrow morning. Lets look forward to the beauty brought to us by science. I also wish you all the best at this party. Thank you! Source: responsible editor of Netease technology report: Yao Liwei, nt6056
