Scientists claim that lycopene found in tomatoes may help solve male reproductive problems. Lycopene is the pigment that gives tomato color. Dietary supplements containing lycopene have been proved to improve the size, shape and vitality of sperm, thereby improving the overall quality of sperm.
More than 40% of infertility problems are caused by sperm abnormalities, so this study is of great significance. But some experts pointed out that the study only involved healthy participants and could not prove that lycopene could improve fertility, so repeated experiments were needed on men with poor sperm quality.
The team recruited 60 healthy volunteers aged 19 to 30. In a 12-week trial, half of the participants took lactose lycopene (12 mg of lycopene) produced by Cambridge Health Products Ltd. and the other half took generic drugs.
The team compared sperm samples collected at the beginning and end of the study and found that men who took lactoglobin had nearly 40% more fast-moving sperm and improved sperm size and shape.
Professor Allan Pacey, the lead author of the study and head of the Department of Oncology and Metabolism at Sheffield University, said: We really didnt expect a difference in sperm between men who took tablets and placebos. But we were surprised by the results. The morphological improvement of sperm is very obvious.
The studys co-author, Dr. Liz Williams, a human nutrition specialist at Sheffield University, said that although she was surprised at the improvement in sperm quality in the experiment, further research was needed through a larger sample size.
The next step, researchers say, is to test men with fertility problems to see if lactose lycopene improves sperm quality and helps their wives conceive successfully.
