Beijing, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) - South Koreas army has decided to reduce its current strength of 464000 troops by about 100000 by 2022 in response to the sharp decline in population, Korean Radio International (KBS) reported Thursday.

Reported that the South Korean Army 11, in the land, sea and air integrated base in Jilong Tai, Zhongnan, reported to the National Defense Commission that it would reduce its military strength and achieve the refinement of the army structure in order to cope with the sharp decline in population. The Army also reported to Congress on the status quo of Defense Reform 2.0 policy promotion.

The South Korean Army said that by 2022, the Army Corps would be reduced from eight to two; by 2025, the Army Division would be reduced from 38 to 33. The Army decided to reduce its current strength of 464,000 to 365,000 in 2022, or 99,000.

It is reported that in order to cope with the weakening of the combat effectiveness caused by the reduction of troops, the military and civilian ordinary people in the army will be restructured to focus on combat and non-combat tasks respectively. The South Korean army also decided to promote the formation of combat effectiveness of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), South Korean mobile helicopters, wheeled armored vehicles, artillery detection radars and other equipment.
