Why did the once-in-a-century Nobel Prize Double Yellow Eggs fall in Europe? Expert analysis

At about 19:00 Beijing time on October 10, the Swedish Academy of Literature announced that the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2018 and 2019 would be awarded to Polish writer Orga Tokalchuk and Austrian writer Peter Handke, respectively. So why did the once-in-a-century double yellow eggs fall in two countries in Europe? Did the five newly added judges outside the court have any practical impact on the awards this year? Can Xue, Yu Hua and other Chinese writers who were very high on the odds list of a British gambling company failed to win the Nobel Prize at last? Is this a pity for the Chinese literary world, and what are the implications?

For this reason, the reporter of Beijing Youth Daily interviewed Mr. Qiu Huadong, Executive Vice President of Lu Xun Literature Academy. He had participated in the Beijing ReadersMeeting with Peter Handke in October 2016, and studied foreign literature for a long time. In this regard, he interpreted these doubts through his personal views and perspectives.

There is an arrogance in the bones of the Nobel Prize

Beiqing Daily: Can Xue, Yu Hua and other Chinese writers who ranked very high in the odds list of a gambling company in the UK did not win the Nobel Prize in the end. Is that a pity for the Chinese literary world? What inspiration do you think?

Qiu Huadong: Generally speaking, the Nobel Prize for Literature is the European Literature Prize. It embodies the humanistic spirit and cultural judgment of the Europeans. There is a kind of arrogance in its essence. The double-yolk egg of the Nobel Prize for Literature falls in Europe, which is in line with the humanistic spirit and political value orientation of Europeans. In this sense, it is not particularly regrettable that Chinese writers did not win the Nobel Prize.

But after all, the award has been awarded for more than 100 years, and the world has a great influence. Chinas Mao Dun Literature Award is only thirty or forty years old, and its history is only one third of the Nobel Prize, so we need to further work hard to build this brand.

Handke won the award or was related to the change of judges

Beiqing Daily: Would it be surprising that Mr. Peter Handke won the Nobel Prize for Literature?

Qiu Huadong: I dont think its unexpected, but unexpected. In fact, he should be a popular candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature around 2000. In German literature, Mr. Peter Handkes works can be said to be the skeleton of thought. One is the inheritance of the traditional spirit of European humanities, the other is the in-depth analysis, judgment and even criticism of contemporary European society, especially Austrian society, which are reflected in his works. In fact, he is a writer with European humanistic spirit. At the same time, he has the color of experimental and avant-garde literature.

His novel, I think, has a style of philosophical novel or ideological novel. It does not rely on stories and plots to win, but on a kind of psychoanalysis, inner consciousness activities, to present the spirit of Europeans. Especially the state of German-speaking countries, which is helpful for us to understand the deep structure of the core culture of some European countries.

In addition, Peter Handke was able to make the Nobel Prize list for nearly 20 people, mainly because the judges of the Nobel Prize for Literature had changed. As early as 2016, after American writer Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature, some academicians of the Swedish Academy of Literature criticized his works intensely, for which several radical female judges resigned. In addition, in 2018, the Swedish Academy of Literature had another female academicians husband suspected of scandal, and several academicians resigned because of dissatisfaction with the academys handling, which led to the postponement of the Nobel Prize for Literature until this year.

This year, five out-of-court judges voted. Perhaps Peter Handkes standpoint was just right for the judges and finally voted for him. Peter Handke won the Nobel Prize in 2019.

Female writers metaphor the fate of Polish culture

Beiqing Daily: How do you evaluate Polish writer Olga Tokalchuk and her works, who just won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2018?

Qiu Huadong: Olga Tokalchuks literary works have been published three times in mainland China. Among them, Archaean and Other Time impressed me deeply.

In my opinion, she is a writer who reflects reality through dreams, myths, legends and history. Orga Tokalchuk himself created a fantastic way to construct the space of fantasy literature and open up time and space. It can be said that the sense of reality in her works is very weak, but she created an aesthetic world, reflecting the circumstances of our human existence. Her works are also interesting and fantastic, but she is not the magic of Latin American literature, nor the magic of the Chinese native land formed by such folklore as Mo Yan.

Her works also reflect the sense of time and history of Polish culture in Central and Eastern Europe. There are many metaphors in her works, which reveal the twists and turns of the fate of Poles and the historical fate pulled between Western Europe and Russia. In fact, you can read this feeling in her works, but she is not clear, she created a literary space, very aesthetic, similar to A Dream of Red Mansions, which has both historical background and aesthetic art.
