NATO Secretary-General urged Turkey to exercise restraint over military operations in northern Syria

Xinhua News Agency, Istanbul, October 11 (Xinhua) - Turkish Foreign Minister Chavushcolu called on NATO to unite with the Turkish side in its counter-terrorism operations, while NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg called on the Turkish side to exercise restraint in military operations in northern Syria.

Stoltenberg said that no other NATO Member States suffered as much from terrorist attacks and violence as Turkey and hosted so many Syrian refugees, but Turkey should exercise restraint in military operations in northern Syria, and NATO was concerned about members of the extremist group Islamic State imprisoned in prisons in northern Syria.

Chavushcolu said that the Islamic State attacked Turkey the most and that Turkey could not release its captives and would hold them accountable and continue to fight resolutely against the organization and other terrorist organizations.

Turkey regards the Kurdish armed forces in northern Syria as terrorist organizations, but the United States regards them as partners in the fight against terrorism. Turkish army launched a strike on Kurdish forces in northern Syria on September 9, which Turkish President Erdogan called a terrorist corridor to prevent the emergence of the border in southern Syria and promote the return of Syrian refugees.
