Wei Zhongquan, a satellite expert, died at the age of 81 during his mission.

The funeral hall, which can hold thousands of people, is full of people from all directions. User unit leaders came, collaboration unit partners came, and colleagues and younger generations came together to send their old comrades-in-arms, old colleagues and old leaders Wei Zhongquan the last journey.

Wei Zhongquan, a famous satellite expert and pioneer of Chinas geostationary meteorological satellite and radar remote sensing satellite, died at 20:58 on October 3 during his mission at Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center. He devoted his last moment of life to his beloved aerospace industry. He was 81 years old.

Wei Zhongquan at work

The last days are still at work.

Recently, the temperature in Taiyuan has dropped sharply and the journey has been too busy. You should attend a video conference in Shanghai instead of going to the launch site. As a former chief designer and now chief designer, Chen Yunli once persuaded Wei. This year is the big year of satellite launching. The Eighth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Group Limited has a arduous task. Wei Zhongquan, as the chief engineer of the project, has many satellites to launch. Each satellite has at least three meetings that he needs to attend.

This launch is extraordinary. Im going to refuel and inspire the Star Arrow Test Team! But after Weis failure, Chen Yunli had to make an appointment with him. When he came back, he would discuss the future satellite planning together on October 7.

In fact, Wei Zhongquan is old enough not to be assigned any more work, but he often takes the initiative to make his schedule full. Every Monday, the project office will send a weeks schedule to General Wei. Sometimes the model is busy. He travels once or twice a week, but in the last year or two, he has traveled a little less.

Its not only his colleagues who want Wei to travel less. During a business trip to Beijing in mid-September, Wei Zhongquans wife, Yao Zenghui, had just undergone surgery. Mrs. Wei Zhongquan likes to go out for a walk, but he has no time to accompany him. He said, Let me do more work when I can do it, and then accompany you when I cant do it.

Before going to Taiyuan, his wife and daughter advised him that he was in poor health and would not go if he could not. But he said, My body is okay now. This star has a special meaning. Maybe its my last time.

Unexpectedly, the phrase is a prophecy.

In the early morning of September 30, Wei Zhongquan, who had just arrived in Taiyuan, suffered from a sudden emergency and was sent to the hospital for treatment. Within three days, the illness turned sharply and unfortunately left the world forever on the evening of October 3. On his deathbed, he tried many times to raise his hand and point it in the direction of the sky...

Riding the wind and cloud forward in setbacks

Independent innovation, arduous struggle, rigorous and meticulous, vigorous coordination, harmonious win-win situation. On the walls of 509 general research rooms in the Eighth Hospital, there are 20 words written by Wei Zhongquan himself. He also interprets these words with his life. He devoted his limited life to the great practice of continuously exploring the Xinjiang area of Chinas application satellite.

In 1982, Wei Zhongquan devoted himself to the development of Fengyun-2, the first geostationary orbit meteorological satellite in China. The fixed-point observation capability of geostationary orbit meteorological satellite can complement the polar orbit meteorological satellite of global scanning, and together constitute the application system of Chinese meteorological satellite. This was also supported by the Ministry of space and user agencies at that time. After the establishment of the satellite project, he served as the chief designer of the satellite.

At that time, only a few countries in the world were able to independently develop geostationary orbit meteorological satellites, and the difficulty was conceivable. Wei Zhongquan proposed to take full advantage of the mature technology and products of Dongfanghong-2 satellite to obtain high-quality cloud images in a spin-stable manner. He chaired and led the team to complete the corresponding key technology research.

But things are changeable. After 12 years of hard struggle, Fengyun II 01 was transported to Xichang Satellite Launch Center in 1994. On the eve of launch, the satellite burst into flames and the satellite was destroyed. Wei Zhongquan was rescued from the accident site by his colleagues.

Both General Yu Weimin and General Chen Jianxin experienced the accident. At that time, everyone was fooled. But Wei always encouraged everyone, he said, complaining and complaining can not reduce the degree of even a little difficulty, it is better to concentrate on their work to prove the value of existence. Seeing General Wei, everyones energy has returned.

Under Wei Zhongquans leadership, scientists and technicians on the model line cheered up quickly, and many injured people joined in to analyze the causes of the accident even though their bodies were not fully recovered.

We quickly and accurately positioned the causes and formulated control measures. Such as the danger of fuel after filling, anti-static control of temperature and humidity and other common sense now seems to be summed up in this experience and lessons, which has also become a valuable asset in the future of Chinas space flight.

After the accident, Wei Zhongquan, as a model consultant, continued to devote himself to the development of the second Fengyun-2 satellite. After three years of hard work, on June 12, 1997, Chinas first geostationary meteorological satellite entered the equator over 36,000 kilometers from the Earth, filling the gap in the field of geostationary meteorological satellite development in China, and making important contributions to meteorological forecasting, cloud image transmission and disaster mitigation and relief in China and neighboring countries in Asia.

Later, recalled, Wei Zhongquan said that the twists and turns of Fengyun 2 were the twists and turns of scientific exploration, and also related to the industrial foundation at that time and our understanding of some technical issues.

The key is to build up confidence in winning, learn lessons from failure, deeply understand the causes and deep-seated things, further understand the technology, cite one from another, and lay a solid foundation for every success in the future. He said so.

Accompanying Tour

Love is a pioneer of remote sensing

At 62, its the end of a career for many people. But for Wei Zhongquan, its a new start. At this age, he served as the chief designer of RS-1.

As early as 1988, a key issue of payload research was included in the 863 plan of China. This is the breakthrough that Wei Zhongquan seeks with strategic vision.

At that time, satellite remote sensing technology was rapidly rising in the world, and many countries had made great breakthroughs. Having worked on satellites for decades, he deeply realized the importance of being forward-looking and taking the lead in realizing leapfrog development of satellite remote sensing technology in China. He secretly resolved to make Chinas remote sensing satellites rank in the forefront of the worlds high-tech development.

In the meantime, the R&D team wanted to seek international cooperation and found relevant countries and enterprises, but they were interfered and refused. This made Wei Zhongquan realize that the real core technology cant be bought. We must take the road of self-reliance and force ourselves to develop our own core technology.

At the beginning, everyone was not optimistic about the project. First, the Eighth Academy is not a traditional satellite development unit, the advantages of satellite grasp ability are not outstanding; second, the payload unit is also a new member of the space camp, and little is known about satellite applications.

Wei Zhongquan took the initiative to coordinate the advantages of load units in various countries, consulting professional knowledge modestly; actively docking with user units to meet user needs, with excellent professional quality and coordination ability to win wide support and trust. He put forward a technological development plan different from foreign satellites, found the right path, and relying on his excellent mathematical skills and learning ability to continuously reduce the error of the algorithm, finally opened up another brand-new application satellite field in China, reaching the world leading level.

In this way, after stepping down as the chief designer of Fengyun-2 satellite, Wei Zhongquan aimed at a completely blank field of Chinas application satellite, led a group of satellite development teams with little engineering experience in general and subsystems, and embarked on a road of radar satellite development with Chinese characteristics.

On April 27, 2006, after seven years of research and development, the remote sensing satellite 1 was successfully launched and operated on orbit in Taiyuan Satellite Center, filling the gaps in the field of remote sensing in China. It is the first self-developed all-weather, all-time and high-resolution remote sensing satellite for earth observation. It is the integration of many new technologies and has completely independent intellectual property rights.

After the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan, the first effective image of the remote sensing satellite in China was provided in time. Through the images, rescue commanders can analyze and judge the damaged houses, landslides, and lake siltation changes in Tangjiashan barrier lake, which can be used as a reference for decision-making of rescue workers.

Cultivating Talents with Modesty

Wei Zhongquan has a saying: did I make it clear? he seldom asks others if they understand him, but he says very modestly, did I just make it clear? young people are very willing to follow him to develop satellites, because he always listens to the opinions of young designers and encourages innovation.

Fan Jixia and Chen Junli both regarded Wei Zhongquan as the leader. Wei is proficient in all aspects of business. He always has new ideas, new ideas and new ideas. He is very good at learning. Wei Zhongquan drives people around him with his words and deeds. He asks others to do so, and he does so himself.

Wei Zhongquans requirements for everyone are very high. He strictly carries out strict and meticulous. He often reviews the report overnight with one word and one punctuation mark. Sometimes he has to change it to 4 or 5 oclock in the morning. Fan Jixia said that he was trained in this way. Chen Yunli often receives a call from General Wei at two or three oclock in the morning. He is afraid of forgetting things at work in the middle of the night, so he will call me to remember them.

Although he was over eighty years old, Wei was a young man in his heart, playing with Wechat, photography and inviting his team members to eat KFC. He often tells young people that if they dont study for a day, they will fall behind. They should pay close attention to the latest progress in the field and strive to make our technology reach the advanced level in the world. He also often knocks on scientific researchers to keep the overall situation in mind and look ahead to the long term.

Singing Peking Opera

Wei is always a ticket friend, especially Laosheng. You can still remember that in 2004, after the satellite training was completed, he sang the section of Lost Street Pavilion on the spot, Dragon and Tiger Fighting between the two countries, and won a lot of applause. We should be lenient in taking charge of the three armies and not free in rewarding and punishing them. And he did the same.

When there are difficulties, we are willing to bear them. When there are honors, we are always thinking about us. Many people remember that Wei always reminded everyone to declare their professional titles, declare awards actively, and take the initiative to consider the development prospects for everyone, but he himself took these very lightly. Only Chen Yunli has seen Wei always treasure the gold medal which won the National Major Project Contribution Award.

In the last few days of his life before his bed, Zhang Mingguang accompanied General Wei by model dispatch. When he packed up his things, Zhang Mingguang found that a sheet of A4 paper at the head of the bed was densely covered with the general Weis schedule. Even lying in bed, Wei Zhongquan was still thinking about studying. When his spiritual head was slightly better, he asked Zhang Mingguang, did he bring his glasses? Did he bring his radar book?
