Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, September 23 (Reporter Zheng Mingda) - Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Iraqi Prime Minister Abdul Mehdi at the Great Hall of the People on September 23.

Xi pointed out that the traditional friendship between China and Iran is profound. Last year, the two sides jointly celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China. At a new historical starting point, China is ready to work with Iran to push bilateral strategic partnership to a new level.

Xi stressed that China firmly supports Iraqi efforts to safeguard national sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity and opposes any external interference in Iraqs internal affairs. China congratulates Iraq on its great victory in the war against terrorism and is ready to continue to actively support and help Iraq carry out counter-terrorism and reconstruction and achieve long-term stability and development of the country.

Xi emphasized that China is the earliest, longest, most widely distributed and most diverse country to participate in Iraqs economic reconstruction. Even in the most critical period of Iraqs security situation, Chinese enterprises remain committed to Iraq. China is willing to strengthen the joint construction of one belt and one road with the reconstruction plan of the Iraqi side, and promote bilateral cooperation in the fields of oil and infrastructure construction. Both China and Iran are ancient civilizations. Both sides should actively carry out cultural exchanges. It is hoped that Iran will continue to take strong measures to ensure the safety of Chinese and Iraqi institutions and personnel. China is willing to strengthen security law enforcement cooperation with Iran.

Xi stressed that the current situation in the Middle East Gulf is complex and sensitive. Relevant parties should maintain calm and restraint, properly resolve their contradictions and differences through peaceful means such as dialogue and negotiation on the basis of mutual respect, and jointly safeguard regional peace and stability. China is willing to maintain communication with all parties concerned, including Iran.
