US Embassy in Iraq was attacked by at least two mortars

BEIJING, Sept. 24, China News Agency (CNA) - Baghdad News: On the evening of 23 local time, the Green Zone of Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, was attacked by at least two mortars, about 1 km from the US Embassy in Iraq.

According to media reports such as the Associated Press and Agence France Presse, Iraqi local security officials confirmed that two mortars attacked the Green Zone. One mortar shell landed on an open space in the Green Zone, and the other fell into the Tigris River near the US Embassy. The official said the attack did not cause casualties.

According to the local media Iraqi News, residents nearby said that after hearing explosions in the Green Zone, alarms were sounded across the Tigris River. The report also quoted Iraqi security sources as saying that for security reasons, two checkpoints in the Green Zone were temporarily closed in an emergency.

The attack comes as tensions between the United States and Iran are rising. Earlier, Saudi Arabias oil facilities were attacked, and the United States blamed Iran. Public opinion generally believes that the incident is related to the recent tension between the United States and Iraq. Iraq currently has more than 5,000 U.S. soldiers and a large number of members of armed groups supporting Iran.

No organized or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is the second time this year that a similar attack has taken place near the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. On the evening of May 19, local time, a Katyusha rocket landed near the statue of an unknown soldier in the Iraqi capital, Green Zone, less than two kilometers from the United States Embassy.

It is reported that the Green Zone generally refers to the area of about 3.9 square miles in the Kark District in central Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Foreign embassies and Iraqi government agencies are located in the Green Zone.
