Although Apples move does not seem to include building new factories in the region, Texas Governor Greg Abbott welcomed Apples previous commitment to Austin. Apples latest investment demonstrates Texass unparalleled labor advantage and excellent business environment, he said.
In 2018, Apple announced plans to spend $1 billion to develop new engineering, research and customer support parks in Austin. In addition to Texas, Apple said the new MacPro will use components produced by companies in Arizona, Maine, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
Apple has previously reported that it has applied for tariff exemptions for 15 components, 10 of which have been approved to allow it to import certain components, including MacPro shells and circuit boards, from outside the United States. Overall, however, Apple claims that parts made in the U.S. are worth 2.5 times more than those made in the previous generation.
Apple said that the production of MacPro in Texas was part of its overall commitment to the U.S. manufacturing economy, and that it had invested more than $1 billion in U.S. companies. More recently, Apple has invested $250 million in Corning, an iPhone glass maker.
In addition to specific investments in component manufacturers, Apple also said it was expanding its business in more than a dozen cities across the country, including San Diego, Seattle and Austin.
In 2019, the new MacPro will go on sale this autumn. It will replace the previous 2013 models and become the high-end model of the Apple product line. In its latest announcement, Apple promised to start production soon. (small)
