Im going to visit Russia, Maduro said. This is an official visit to Russia.

He said that the two sides will analyze the development trend of bilateral relations and seek ways to promote cooperation in the economic, cultural and social fields between the two countries.

Maduro won re-election in May 2018 and took office in January, but the opposition refused to recognize him. On January 23, Guaido, a key member of the opposition and President of the National Congress, declared himself interim president.

In order to force Maduro to step down, the United States exerted pressure by means of economic sanctions, diplomatic isolation and military threats. The United States has so far placed Maduro and more than 100 Venezuelans associated with the government on the sanctions list.

Maduro had previously condemned the threat of blockade of Venezuela by the United States Government, saying that he had asked the Permanent Representative of Venezuela to inform the United Nations Security Council of the situation.
