Netease Entertainment reported on September 19 that Du Qifeng resigned as chairman of the Golden Horse Award Jury because of the limitation of the contract. Du Qifeng expressed his deep regret for the inconvenience. The Golden Horse Award Executive Committee and Chairman Ang Lee expressed their understanding of Du Qifengs situation. It is reported that Wang Tong will take over the chairmanship of the Golden Horse Award Jury.

Wang Tong has won six Golden Horse Awards. In 1976, he first won the 13th Golden Horse Award for Best Art with Maple Leaf Love. In 1981, his maiden work If I Are Real won the 18th Golden Horse Award for Best Picture. In 1983, he won the 20th Golden Horse Award for Best Costume Design with World No. 1. In 1985, he also won the 22nd Golden Horse Award with Driving Horses into Forest. Best art and costume design, and then with Scarecrow (1987), and Silent Hills (1992) won the 24th and 29th Golden Horse Award for Best Director. In 2005, Red Boy: Fire Mountain in the Final Battle won the 42nd Golden Horse Award for best animated feature film. Other representative works include Days of Watching the Sea (1983), Banana Paradise (1989), Tomatoes (1995), 10+10 Thank God (2011), Family in the Wind (2015), etc.

The Golden Horse Award was hit hard again and sponsors ran out after mainland movies withdrew.

Not long ago, the mainland and Hong Kong announced their withdrawal from the 2019 Taiwan Golden Horse Film Festival, which had a huge impact on the islands film and television industry. Recently, there has been media exposure, the Golden Horse Award sponsors including Bulgari, OPPO, Earl and so on have withdrawn from the event.

A number of Hong Kong film companies cancelled their participation in the Golden Horse Award.

Following the suspension of mainland films and people from participating in the 56th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival in 2019 by the National Film Administration, many Hong Kong film companies have expressed their views and cancelled their participation in the Golden Horse Award.
