At 9:00 p.m. on September 6, a young Siberian tiger climbed up a 3-meter-high iron fence and jumped out of an open-air circus in Biandang Wang Village, Taiping Town, Yuanyang County, Xinxiang City, Henan Province. In the field, a trainer tried to stop with a stick, but it was of no avail.
After the incident, the local police at the city and county levels, hundreds of villagers to assist in the search. On the morning of September 7, the tiger was captured in a corn field and died when it was sent to the local zoo. The cause of death is still under investigation. On September 7, a reporter from the Beijing News learned from the Yuanyang County Government that Zhang Feng, a 23-year-old local organizer of the circus, was detained by the police after the accident. His circus was set up at the end of August. Without a wildlife license, the tiger was leased from an animal training troupe in Suzhou, Anhui Province. It arrived on September 2nd and the first performance four days later went wrong. Behind the escaping tiger incident of Yuanyang circus, the circus industry is shrinking day by day. A veterinarian in Cangzhou, Hebei Province, who used to work in a circus, said today (September 10) that the number of circuses is declining rapidly. Its a tough business to survive, and many of us have changed careers. Today (September 10), animal protection activist Hu Chunmei told the Beijing News that since 2014, more than half of the wildlife exhibitions they supervised and reported had not completed the procedures for wildlife exhibitions. Animal performance itself is cruelty to animals, she said.
After escaping, the tiger was injured by a car.
When the tiger escaped, Zhang Yongfu (a pseudonym) was on the spot. Its a show that starts at 8 p.m. with tickets of 10 yuan each. More than 100 people came to watch the scene, mostly children. Zhang Yongfu brought two children to watch.
In fact, tiger escape is not without warning.
Zhang Yongfu said that around 8:30 p.m., a performing tiger jumped directly to the top of a truck in the venue, causing panic among the audience. Then the tiger was driven off by the trainer and locked up.
At 9 p.m., the tiger was released to perform again. This accident happened when the tiger climbed up the fence and escaped in a scream despite the whip of the trainer.
Zhang Yongfu said that in a video widely circulated on the Internet, Zhang Feng was the man who hit the tiger and tried to prevent it from escaping.
After the tiger escaped from prison, the crowd fled everywhere. Zhang Yongfu introduced that because there was a school next to the performance venue, school security opened the door and let many people hide in the school. Next to the venue was a highway where the tiger escaped.
After the incident, the local government prompted the villagers to stay at home and close the doors and windows by means of Wechat Groups. That evening, police cars came to Biantang Wang Village one after another.
Zhang Yongfu saw the tiger through his window on September 7 at 1 a.m. One of the tigers front legs was lame, and he drank in a basin in front of his house. After two or three minutes, he ran off to the nearby corn fields. A person in charge of the Yuanyang county government said that the tiger escaped and ran to the highway and was injured by a driving car.
According to the official bulletin of Yuanyang County, the police used unmanned aerial vehicles, thermal imaging technology and other equipment to search for tigers. On September 7, in a maize field in Biantang Wang Village, the police locked the tigers position and formed a siege to it. Finally, through anesthesia, the police successfully captured the tiger and tied its limbs, carried it in a tractor, and sent it to the Xinxiang Zoo.

Family workshop circus, organizer and father-in-law were detained
The tiger died on its way to Xinxiang Zoo.
On September 8, the head of Yuanyang County Government said that the tigers body had been frozen in the zoo. The cause of death was uncertain. Whether it was related to the car crash or not still needed to be identified by the relevant departments.
As the young Siberian tiger escaped and died, Zhang Feng, 23, was in trouble. Although the incident did not cause casualties and property damage, as the organizer of the circus show, he was criminally detained by the police.
Previously, the Minister of Propaganda Department of Yuanyang County Party Committee disclosed to reporters of the Beijing News that Zhang Feng was involved in the crime of illegal transportation of endangered wildlife and the crime of endangering public safety. In addition, the performance has not been filed with the local authorities.
A staff member of Xinxiang Forestry Bureau also said that Zhangfengs circus did not have a wildlife license.
Zhang Feng, a 23-year-old villager from Mozhang Village, Taiping Town, Yuanyang County, followed the circus to perform in various places as a teenager. He used to play tricks and domesticate animals at the circus in Shandong Province. His wife Wu Yan (a pseudonym) told Xinjing News that Zhang Fengs wildlife artificial breeding license had not been issued.
Zhang Feng, who has worked in circus for many years, has always wanted to work alone. On August 20 this year, Zhang Feng established the Cultural and Art Club of Haitao Literary and Art Performing Troupe of Yuanyang County.
On September 1st, Zhang Feng signed a lease contract with an animal training group in Anhui Province, renting two Siberian tigers, a lion, a goat and a monkey at a monthly rent of 15,000 yuan. On September 2, they were transported to Zhang Fengs house. At the same time, an Anhui veterinarian came to Zhangs house, but after two days of help and guidance, the veterinarian left.
This short-term circus is a family workshop model. Apart from Father Zhang, who went out to work, his family helped. Zhang Fengs father-in-law, Wu Yans father, is also a circus worker. He was also detained by the police after the accident.

The circus industry has shrunk and trainers have changed careers
In some peoples eyes, Zhang Fengs circus industry, which is bent on improving his familys condition, has been declining.
Master Wang of Wuqiao County, Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, worked in circuses. Today, the circus industry is shrinking rapidly and the number of circuses is declining rapidly, he said. Many of the circuses have gone bankrupt and our side has basically been disbanded. Now its a tough business to survive, and many people have changed their careers.
Master Wang worked in a circus for more than 20 years and now works as a keeper in a zoo. He said that in the past there were tigers and lions in circus performances, but now there are no large animals in many circus performances, and many difficult and dangerous projects are no longer carried out. Nowadays, when many circuses perform, they use puppies, goats and so on. There are fewer large animals.
Master Wang introduced that circus is still the traditional teaching mode of master with apprentice. A mature trainer can earn between 56,000 and 78,000 yuan a month. Because he earned less, Master Wang and other trainers changed careers.
Master Wang said that Longqiao District, Suzhou City, Anhui Province, is the home of Chinese circus, and now there are more circuses in Anhui Province. In the tiger escape incident in Yuanyang County, Henan Province, Zhang Feng rented animals for performance from an animal training group in Longqiao District, Anhui Province.
Animal Protectors: Many mobile circuses support tigers like livestock
Today (September 10), animal protection activist Hu Chunmei told the Beijing News that renting animals between circuses is common, but not necessarily legal. Hu Chunmei said that since 2014, more than half of the wildlife exhibitions they supervised and reported had no perfect procedures for wildlife exhibitions.
She said that small mobile circuses lack professional technicians. In the early years, equestrian performances dominated circuses. It was not until the 1970s and 1980s that circuses began to raise tigers in large quantities for performances. Many of them dont have professional knowledge of raising animals. Like raising livestock, tigers and other animals are not protected.
Hu Chunmei said that many circuses treat animals violently in the process of domesticating animals. Animal performances are against animal nature, and they are cruel to animals themselves. Han Miao, a lawyer at Beijing Kangda Law Firm, said today (September 10) that circuses are business performers in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Wildlife Protection Law, the Measures for the Administration of National Key Wildlife Conservation Domestication and Reproduction Licenses and the Regulations on the Management of Business Performances. The wildlife protected by the State shall be the object of performance, and a series of license documents such as business performance license, artificial breeding license, transportation license of wildlife, operation and utilization license of wildlife, quarantine certificate, legitimate business license and tax certificate shall be required.
