Hua Chunying said that this is not the first time that the US scientific research community has made such a call, expressing its clear opposition to the US governments actions to suppress foreign scientists and international scientific and technological exchanges. Not long ago, about 150 leading US scientists jointly signed up against the US government and some universities to exclude and suppress Chinese scientists.
Many well-known university leaders in the United States have publicly voiced their support for international talent exchange and scientific research cooperation, and opposed the unreasonable restrictions imposed by law enforcement and intelligence agencies on normal scientific, technological and educational exchanges between China and the United States. This shows that strengthening Sino-US cultural exchanges conforms to public opinion, conforms to the peoples will and serves the common interests of both sides. A few days ago, President Bollinger of Columbia University published a signed article questioning the US governments policy towards international students and scholars. He opposed the US law enforcement and intelligence agenciesrequest that US universities supervise foreign students and visiting scholars from China and other countries. He believed that this requirement was seriously opposed to the nature of American universities openness and diversity.
Hua Chunying expressed the hope that the relevant departments of the United States would listen to the rational voices of the domestic and international community, stop unjustified restrictions and nuisances on Chinese students and scholars in the United States, safeguard their legitimate rights and interests, and do more things conducive to Sino-American cultural exchanges.
