Establishment of a special working class in Suzhou to study the construction of Suzhou Airport

With the new terminal of Shuofang Airport in Wuxi officially put into operation in 2007, airports have been built in Shanghai, Wuxi, Changzhou and Nantong around Suzhou. In 2010 and 2015, there were several proposals for the construction of airports in Suzhou, but there were no further proposals.

On July 12, Xu Huimin, Mayor of Nantong City, announced that the planning and construction of Nantong New Airport was included in the Outline of the Yangtze River Delta Regional Integration Development Plan, which will be an important part of Shanghai International Aviation Hub and become the Third Airport of Shanghai. It further triggered public discussion on Suzhou Airport. In the view of Lu Wenhua, director of Suzhou Transport Bureau, it is a necessary and urgent task for Suzhou to build an airport, whether in terms of travel demand or airport throughput gap in the Yangtze River Delta region. Lu Wenhua revealed that since August last year, a special working class has been set up in Suzhou to plan and study the construction of Suzhou Airport. Up to now, we have completed the preliminary work of the necessity study, planning and site selection, airspace research, route research, and environmental assessment of the surrounding areas of Suzhou Airport. We believe that the dream of building an airport in Suzhou will be fulfilled in the future.
