After many exposures, Huaweis Hongmeng system finally came to the foreground. On August 9, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huaweis consumer business, officially launched Hongmeng OS at the Huawei DevelopersConference in 2019, announcing the full landing of Huaweis self-developed operating system. Yu Chengdong said that based on the partnership with Google, Huawei will not apply Hongmeng system to smartphone business for the time being. However, if Android cant be used in Huaweis mobile phone, you can always use Hongmeng system.
Yu Chengdong said that the original Hongmeng system will be launched next spring, but the trade war and U.S. government sanctions accelerated the introduction of the Hongmeng system. He stressed that Huawei is not going to be another Android, but Hongmeng is going to be the next generation of operating system. This is the new scene of interconnection under 5G conditions.
With the deployment of 5G network and the interconnection of different terminals, it is necessary to further enhance the cross-platform capability of the operating system. Hence, Hongmengs launch is not only to defend against the outage of Android, but also to prepare Huawei for the coming Internet of Things era.
Why is it launched?
Instead of locating mobile phones, competing for the highlight of the Internet of Things Era
The direct reason for Huaweis efforts to promote the Hongmeng system at that time was the ban imposed by the U.S. government. On May 16 this year, the U.S. government announced plans to list Huawei as an entity. American suppliers, including Google, will suspend some business contacts with Huawei. The most direct impact is that Huaweis new mobile phone products will not be able to continue to carry Android system, which made Huaweis mobile phone sales in overseas markets once large. It fell sharply.
But from a higher strategic point of view, the launch of Hongmeng system is a step for Huawei to compete for the high point of the Internet of Things era. Yu Chengdong said at the conference that Android/Linux kernel code is huge and redundant, and it is difficult to ensure the smooth experience of different terminals. In addition, multi-terminal interconnection requires higher requirements for device security, and a strong operating system is needed to integrate hardware and software. Although major manufacturers are committed to developing new operating systems, they still face difficulties and bottlenecks, and cross-terminal experience is difficult to guarantee. We need to reduce the difficulty of development.
Huaweis Hongmeng system is to solve the problem of multi-terminal development in the Internet of Things era. Yu Chengdong introduced that Hongmeng OS has new features such as distributed OS architecture, deterministic delay engine and high-performance IPC technology, which can enable Hongmeng OS to achieve one-end development and multi-end deployment.
Previously, Ren Zhengfei, founder and chairman of Huawei, mentioned in an interview with foreign media that Hongmeng was not created for mobile phones, but for the Internet of Things. For example, automatic driving, industrial automation, because it can accurately control the delay below five milliseconds, or even up to milliseconds to sub-milliseconds.
However, it is worth noting that because the Hongmeng system has just been released and the application ecology is not yet perfect, the current architecture of the Hongmeng system still retains the Linux kernel and Android, and all the kernels will be replaced by Hongmeng microkernels in the future.
In fact, Google has also released a new kernel-based operating system, Fuchsia, which is also aimed at Internet of Things applications. Through Fuchsia, Google implements the interconnection of smart home devices, wearable devices and even VR hardware.
Where is the application?
Hong Meng launched the next day, the first show of Glory Wisdom Screen
Hongmeng System was first introduced at the developersconference, but the first product to land was not Huaweis smartphone, but a glorious smart screen. The new product will be officially launched on August 10, the second day of the developersconference. Before that, Zhao Ming, President of Glory, disclosed that he and Yu Chengdong actively promoted the smart screen project in the company from 2015 until 2017, when the company was clear that the orientation of the smart screen is not to do traditional TV, but to bring value to the television industry.
Yu Chengdong said that at present, Huawei has not yet used Hongmeng on mobile phones, mainly considering Googles partnership, but if Android system is not available, Huawei will start Hongmeng at any time. If you want to switch from Android to Hongmeng, the workload is very small, very fast.
According to the PT of Yu Chengdongs speech, the research and development of Hongmeng OS 1.0 will start in 2017. In 2019, Hongmeng OS 1.0 will first be put on the smart screen. In 2020, Hongmeng OS 2.0 will be applied to innovative domestic PC, watch/bracelet and locomotive. In 2021, Hongmeng OS 3.0 will be used for speakers and headphones, and in 2022, it is expected to be applied to VR devices.
Developers who participated in the conference told Beijing News that Huawei is now ahead of Apple and millet in smartphone shipments in the domestic market. If all smartphones are enabled with Hongmeng system, it will be a huge application market, but Hongmeng will not land on smartphones in the near future, which will appeal to developers. Not much.
How to break the situation?
Difficulties in Ecosystem Construction in Developed Countries
As we all know, the strength of Android and Apple systems lies in the construction of their application ecology, through which a large number of developers have made considerable income. Last year, Apple CEO Cook revealed at Apples Global Developers Conference that in the past 10 years since the launch of the AppStore, developers have accumulated over $100 billion in revenue share. Therefore, Huawei must try to attract developers to join Hongmengs ecosystem.
On August 9, Ni Guangnan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, told the Beijing News that the biggest difficulty of the domestic operating system lies in the construction of ecosystems. However, he has great expectations for the future of the Hongmeng system.
Academician Ni Guangnan said that in terms of operating system, it is not necessarily that our technology is worse than others, but that it is more difficult to build an ecosystem. Because developed countries are first-in-class, they have established a complete ecosystem in the market, and the new ecosystem can only be established through a virtuous cycle of the market, which is not easy.
Academician Ni Guangnan believes that China has a favorable condition, that is, the market is very large. He expressed the hope that the operating system independently developed in China would be able to establish its own ecosystem faster with the support of Chinas huge market. As one of the important advocates of domestic operating systems, Academician Ni Guangnan emphasized that China must master the core technologies including operating systems. The key core technology should be based on independent innovation and controlled independently. At the national level, Huawei is a typical example.
At the developer conference, Huawei announced that Hongmeng OS will open source to global developers, and promoted the establishment of an open source foundation and an open source community. Wang Chenglu, president of Huawei Consumer Business Software, said that the Ark Compiler has been developed and has cooperated with 40 + Top applications such as Youku, Sina, Baidu and Taobao.
Yu Chengdong said in an interview that Huawei would give more royalties to developers, and the Yaoxing Project would continue to support the work of developers. According to the data released by Huawei, as of July 2019, more than 200 applications had passed the certification of Yaoxing Plan and obtained corresponding incentive resources. The various forms of incentive resources of Yaoxing Plan have brought more than 100 billion exposures and more than 1 million effective installations to the selected products.
Zhang Ping, President of Huawei Consumer Cloud Services, announced that the total amount of Yaoxing Plan will reach US$1 billion. At present, Huawei has 910,000 registered developers worldwide, and the monthly life of Huaweis application market reaches 370 million.
Huawei mobile phone shipments will reach 240 million this year
Yu Chengdong disclosed in his keynote speech that Huaweis consumer business has grown 68-fold in the past eight years, with smartphone shipments reaching 118 million units in the first half of this year, a 24% increase over the same period last year. In the first half of this year, Huaweis market share in China was 35%, and in the global market, Huaweis share rose to 17.6% in the second quarter of this year, after Samsungs 22.7%, according to Yu Chengdong, citing third-party agency data.
Affected by the ban and trade war, Huaweis overseas sales of mobile phones fell by 40%, but they have recovered recently. Yu Chengdong said that Huaweis overseas income had recovered to more than 80% before the ban, and some countries and regions had 90%. In an interview after the meeting, he said that if there were no sanctions and trade wars this year, Huawei would have the chance to become the worlds largest mobile phone manufacturer. At present, it is expected that the total number of smartphone shipments this year will reach 240 million, which means that Huaweis target for the second half of the year is 122 million.
Consumer business has become Huaweis most important revenue pillar. According to the semi-annual report released earlier, Huawei achieved revenue of 40.13 billion yuan in the first half of the year, an increase of 23.2% over the previous year. Among them, consumer business income was 220.8 billion yuan, accounting for 55% of the companys revenue.
For the progress of 5G mobile phone, Yu Chengdong said that the domestic 5G network construction will take time, but the terminal level glory and Huaweis flagship mobile phone will support 5G. Next year, all smartphones will turn into 5G era, including those in the range of 2000 yuan and 3000 yuan.
In addition, to the recent media reports that the US-funded company Viaco seized hundreds of millions of yuan of materials and equipment privately, Yu Chengdong told the Beijing News that Viacos seizure of Huaweis production materials and equipment would have a certain impact, but the impact on production is controllable. I dont think partners should do this. Were doing it, but were making up for it in other ways.
