Tesla began accepting bookings when it launched ModelY in March, and said delivery would begin as early as autumn 2020. At that time, Tesla did not disclose plans for the production of the new electric car.

But in April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced plans to produce ModelY at the first quarterly earnings conference in 2019. We are now deciding whether to base ModelY in California or Nevada, and we expect to make a final decision soon, he said.

Since then, there have been many signs that Tesla is focusing on producing ModelY at the Fremont plant in California. Today, Tesla released its second quarter results for 2019 and mentioned ModelYs production plan.

Tesla said in her earnings report: Preparations for the production of ModelY in Fremont start in the second quarter. Because there are many common components between Model3 and ModelY, we can use existing manufacturing designs to develop ModelY production facilities. In addition, we have made progress in managing ModelY costs. Compared with Model3, the expected cost premium is very small. Because of the large market size of SUV and the higher average price, we believe that ModelY will be more profitable than Model3.

At the same time, Tesla is also making a number of major manufacturing technological improvements, which are expected to be launched in conjunction with ModelY products, including revolutionary new wiring structures and huge new foundry machines.
