 SpaceX has won NASAs new contract to launch a black hole research probe


SpaceX, an American space exploration technology company owned by Silicon Valleys Iron Man Musk, has won a new contract from NASA to launch X-ray imaging polarization detectors (IXPE) for the latter.

On July 9, NASA announced that SpaceX would launch its X-ray imaging polarization detector. SpaceX will launch IXPE using a second-hand Falcon 9 rocket that has already been validated in flight. The total cost of the contract is about $5.3 million. According to the current plan, SpaceX will carry out the mission from LC-39A launch pad at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, in April 2021.

IXPE, weighing about 300 kilograms, will study polarized light from neutron stars, pulsar wind clouds (PWN) and supermassive black holes, providing far more imaging than existing space observation resources. The mission will help scientists who are studying magnetars, black holes and pulsar wind clouds. It is reported that IXPE is only one of a series of NASA launch contracts awarded by SpaceX. Other launches include regular replenishment missions for NASA to the International Space Station. In April, NASA signed a $69 million contract with SpaceX to use Falcon 9 to perform the agencys dual asteroid redirection test (DART) mission, which may be completed as early as June 2021.
